Nora Ellsworth, darling of London society, has her choice of eligible suitors, but since childhood, she has been expected to marry Jonathan Browning, a gentleman whose wealth and stability will someday secure the futures of Nora and her mother and sister. The family estate will pass to an odious male cousin upon the death of Nora’s father, and when he suddenly takes ill, her need to marry well becomes vitally important.

As Nora struggles with the idea of marrying without love, she finds herself increasingly drawn to Devlin Fausett, a man with dark eyes and intriguing conversation. But Devlin’s reputation as an indebted gambler is difficult to ignore. Despite the rumors from the ton and the marriage decision before her, Nora is determined to befriend the dashing Mr. Fausett, and his charms soon make it all but impossible to remember her duty. Until she learns the truth of her fortune. There is a way to keep her family’s estate, but the price is high: Nora must wed, as soon as possible. Torn between two very different men, she must make the ultimate decision. Will she be guided by her head or her heart?

What struck me the most with this book was that moment of certain clarity when Nora and Devlin knew they were truly in love with the other. The author described everything so that we could see it clearly and as deeply as they felt. What that love was like, what it meant to them personally and how the other person made them better. Those moments happened to them at separate times and I was grateful that the author shared that in such a way as to make it very real for the reader and showed the depth of the characters and make me sigh and fall in love too!!

These two snippets aren't those moments of clarity but moments that are so tender...

I placed my hand on his face, leaned over, and placed a single kiss on his cheek. Mr. Fausett deserved nothing less.

Her presence calmed me. Soothed me. Assured me that no matter the difficulty, I could triumph because she believed in me.

I was very disappointed in our hero, Mr Devlin Fausett, in the beginning. He was a gambler. But he knew it wasn’t the winning that he was at it for. But you have to read the book to find out his reasons for his addiction and his many debts. It isn’t until he is at his worst and with Nora’s anger that he can pick himself up and move forward. But I was also easily charmed by him and couldn’t stay disappointed for long. He is a gentleman after all!

Nora learns secrets as time goes on. She thinks through things. She is not impulsive. She knows she is supposed to marry Jonathan Browning. But there would be no love there. Jonathan is a good man. Devlin Fausett is also a good man and a gentleman who comes from a good lineage, but his reputation has her parents not wanting her to think of him for marriage. Devlin is also thoughtful and caring and is able to help in matters that Mr. Jonathan Browning can not! Devlin is more matched to Nora. Devlin knows how to save the day!! Yes, I am swooning over him. I admit it!

There are other little subplots in the story and the story is well developed and kept me reading until I was finished! There is the evil villian in the story. I loved the bits of humor in the turmoil at the end as well. Devlin did make one last wager at the end and he won. Nora was glad he did win that one! You will have to read it to find out what that one was! It was absolutely perfect!

If you like reading about gambling, bad guys, arrogant guys, entail, inheritance, realizing that you love someone very deeply, horses, timepieces, doctors, family then this might be for you! As for me, I’m still swooning!

Chalon Linton was first introduced to Jane Austen by a dear friend and now she can’t get enough of handsome men in tailcoats. Her intrigue in the genre stems from a nostalgic longing for manners, wit, and true love. Fortunately, Chalon found her dashing gentleman, married him, and now lives happily ever after in Southern California.
