“If Janet Evanovich teamed with a young adult, fairy-tale author like Marissa Meyer (the Lunar Chronicles) or Alex Flinn (Beastly), the result might be something like Christina Bauer’s Wolves and Roses.” –Blue Ink Review

Seventeen-year-old Bryar Rose has a problem. She’s descended from one of the three magical races—shifters, fairies, or witches. That makes her one of the Magicorum, and Magicorum always follow a fairy tale life template. In Bryar’s case, that template should be Sleeping Beauty.

“Should” being the key word.

Trouble is, Bryar is nowhere near the sleeping beauty life template. Not even close. She doesn’t like birds or woodland creatures. She can’t sing. And she certainly can’t stand Prince Philpot, the so-called “His Highness of Hedge Funds” that her aunties want her to marry. Even worse, Bryar’s having recurring dreams of a bad boy hottie and is obsessed with finding papyri from ancient Egypt. What’s up with that?

All Bryar wants is to attend a regular high school with normal humans and forget all about shifters, fairies, witches, and the curse that Colonel Mallory the Magnificent placed on her. And she might be able to do just that–if only she can just keep her head down until her eighteenth birthday when the spell that’s ruined her life goes buh-bye.

But that plan gets turned upside down when Bryar Rose meets Knox, the bad boy who’s literally from her dreams. Knox is a powerful werewolf, and his presence in her life changes everything, and not just because he makes her knees turn into Jell-O. If Bryar can’t figure out who—or what—she really is, it might cost both her and Knox their lives… as well as jeopardize the very nature of magic itself.

Bryar Rose is a girl who is a little kick butt but also a little something else. She was adopted by 3 fairies and is homeschooled and goes to a group therapy. She knows of the magic world she lives in but she is just a human in it. Or so she thinks. Her fairy mothers are a little overbearing and can’t wait till she turns 18 and marries Philpot (what kind of name is that anyways??). She is happy just sneaking around with her best friend (Elle) and trying to decipher hieroglyphics.

But then she is caught in the act taking pictures of a new batch of hieroglyphics where she shouldn’t be. There she meets Knox, a werewolf, and Alec, a wizard, and her world suddenly changes. She is caught up in a world of lies and betrayals and magic that she never could have imagined. She also learns more about herself and what she is.

I loved the adventure. There is a lot of good vs evil. There is a lot of good looking guys and a little romance. There is a whole world of magic too. But my biggest qualm is that it read more like an adult book than young adult. These kids are teenagers living life like adults. There are some scenes that even read like an adult and I chose this book to read because I thought it was young adult. So I was disappointed in that and even some words that bugged me. The other thing that bugged me was the two girlfriends just happened to catch up with 2 guys who hang out all the time too. They are like set up to be boyfriend and girlfriends between each set of best friends. Just too perfect for me.

I want to know what Bryar Rose does next. She does seem to want a normal life but she really can’t and I’m curious as to how she will handle that.

If you like The Mortal Instruments, magic, fantasy, adventure, betrayals, fairies, shifters, wizards, than this might be for you.

  1. Thanks for hosting today, Kelly! Great review! :)

  2. Enjoyed the review and I do like that cover. A combo of Evanovich and Meyer, sounds like a great story to me.
