Tour & GIveaway: Daughter 4254 by Leigh Statham

Tour Schedule

Daughter 4254 by Leigh Statham.
Audience/Genre: Dystopian.
Publication: November 7th 2017 by Owl Hollow Press.
Daughter4254 used to think life in a community where art, music and names are outlawed would suffocate her creative spirit. Now that she’s rotting in a prison cell, she’s not sure her dying mother made the right choice when she entrusted her with the secrets of rebellion. Prison has given her plenty of time to relive every mistake and lose all hope.

Then she meets Thomas, a fellow inmate, who tells her stories of the mythical mountain colonies where people have names and the arts thrive. Together they plot an escape, knowing if they fail, they will die. Or worse, their consciousness will be taken by the MindWipe, leaving their bodies free for the government to use. When nothing goes as planned, Daughter4254 must choose between using her mother’s secret to better the world she hates, or following Thomas to the quiet life of freedom she has always craved.

Seriously, this book caught me at the first chapter and I didn’t stop until it was over!

The book goes back and forth in time from before she was imprisoned and then while she was imprisoned. Giving us clues of what happened to get her landed in jail!! My heart went out to Daughter4254. It was a sad life. And whenever hope was available, she took it!

The story takes place in the 22nd century after a great war. Now everything is government run. Including what job you will take, and it seems like the station you are too. Emotions are not allowed. You are alive and your basic needs are met. You are kept alive as long as you are of “use”. But after a certain age, medicine is not given to you and you are basically put down like an animal. Your name is also assigned to you not given by your parents. I remember the movie, Ben Hur. There was a time where he was considered a slave and on the boat he was on he was addressed in an unkind tone as if he wasn’t human and with a number not a name. That part always stuck with me so when I saw this I was curious and sure enough, Daughter 4254 is addressed with out feeling by her own brother and professor (I can’t remember his number). It’s creepy and made me want to help Daugter 4254 in her quest!

Daughter 4254 is considered neuro deficient. Those are the people born with passion; artists and designers, those who think outside the box. That is a bad thing there. She was always being defiant. And wanted more feeling and understanding. She was punished often for being disobedient to the rules. There are “eyes” watching you everywhere. Cameras. Even in the home. But when there is a place without eyes, her mother tells her she loves her and inspires her. But her mother becomes “useless” and dies. Now Daugher 4254 is lost. Her mother writes her a contraband letter and its given to her by her uncle that tells her to enroll in the secondary school and find this professor and he will help her. Her father and brother are so emotionless that her brother actually dislikes her for being so different! She decides to apply. She is ridiculed for even trying. But there is no law saying she can’t. So she takes the placement test and her score is perfect!

So she gets in and here is where I want to give her warnings and help her! She is given clothes to match others and cleaned up. She feels like the others and makes friends. When she meets the professor, he is not what she thought and he doesn’t even want to talk to her.

The desire to find out what happens in the next chapter, and the chapter after that and the one after that, etc', kept me on the edge of my seat and wishing I could really read faster! She is really going to get in trouble with the things she is doing and my heart is pounding with worry that she will get caught.

Once we get to the present, her friend in the cell across from her has a name that he goes by and it isn’t a number. He gives her hope and when she is on the verge of giving up and dying she tries to live so she can get out with him.

There is so much to this story. The writing kept me glued. The characters were interesting and complex. You really should check it out!!!

Then when you get to the end, it’s a cliffhanger! Then there is a peek at the first chapter of the next book and it’s an even worse cliffhanger (which is also a pun by the way!!!)

Tour & Giveaway: Wolves and Roses (Fairy Tales of the Magicorum #1) by Christina Bauer

Tour Schedule

Wolves & Roses
Christina Bauer
(Fairy Tales of the Magicorum #1)
Published by: Monster House Books
Publication date: October 31st 2017
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult

“If Janet Evanovich teamed with a young adult, fairy-tale author like Marissa Meyer (the Lunar Chronicles) or Alex Flinn (Beastly), the result might be something like Christina Bauer’s Wolves and Roses.” –Blue Ink Review

Seventeen-year-old Bryar Rose has a problem. She’s descended from one of the three magical races—shifters, fairies, or witches. That makes her one of the Magicorum, and Magicorum always follow a fairy tale life template. In Bryar’s case, that template should be Sleeping Beauty.

“Should” being the key word.

Trouble is, Bryar is nowhere near the sleeping beauty life template. Not even close. She doesn’t like birds or woodland creatures. She can’t sing. And she certainly can’t stand Prince Philpot, the so-called “His Highness of Hedge Funds” that her aunties want her to marry. Even worse, Bryar’s having recurring dreams of a bad boy hottie and is obsessed with finding papyri from ancient Egypt. What’s up with that?

All Bryar wants is to attend a regular high school with normal humans and forget all about shifters, fairies, witches, and the curse that Colonel Mallory the Magnificent placed on her. And she might be able to do just that–if only she can just keep her head down until her eighteenth birthday when the spell that’s ruined her life goes buh-bye.

But that plan gets turned upside down when Bryar Rose meets Knox, the bad boy who’s literally from her dreams. Knox is a powerful werewolf, and his presence in her life changes everything, and not just because he makes her knees turn into Jell-O. If Bryar can’t figure out who—or what—she really is, it might cost both her and Knox their lives… as well as jeopardize the very nature of magic itself.

Bryar Rose is a girl who is a little kick butt but also a little something else. She was adopted by 3 fairies and is homeschooled and goes to a group therapy. She knows of the magic world she lives in but she is just a human in it. Or so she thinks. Her fairy mothers are a little overbearing and can’t wait till she turns 18 and marries Philpot (what kind of name is that anyways??). She is happy just sneaking around with her best friend (Elle) and trying to decipher hieroglyphics.

But then she is caught in the act taking pictures of a new batch of hieroglyphics where she shouldn’t be. There she meets Knox, a werewolf, and Alec, a wizard, and her world suddenly changes. She is caught up in a world of lies and betrayals and magic that she never could have imagined. She also learns more about herself and what she is.

I loved the adventure. There is a lot of good vs evil. There is a lot of good looking guys and a little romance. There is a whole world of magic too. But my biggest qualm is that it read more like an adult book than young adult. These kids are teenagers living life like adults. There are some scenes that even read like an adult and I chose this book to read because I thought it was young adult. So I was disappointed in that and even some words that bugged me. The other thing that bugged me was the two girlfriends just happened to catch up with 2 guys who hang out all the time too. They are like set up to be boyfriend and girlfriends between each set of best friends. Just too perfect for me.

I want to know what Bryar Rose does next. She does seem to want a normal life but she really can’t and I’m curious as to how she will handle that.

If you like The Mortal Instruments, magic, fantasy, adventure, betrayals, fairies, shifters, wizards, than this might be for you.

The snow crunched beneath Charlie’s feet as he scuttled through the woods, not knowing where he was going. Whichever way he looked, darkness was creeping up on him. He had to squint to see through the falling snow. Hearing Jacob’s voice some way behind him, he stopped and hid behind a tree.
The night was cold and misty. A gentle wind blew, making the hairs on the back of his neck prick, and he shivered. Apart from the slight crackling oftwigs and the rustling of wildlife hidden in the darkness, it was quiet. Peering out from behind the tree, he saw the hazy light of the torch, which was moving away from him.
A snapping sound behind him made him jump, and he spun around. He gasped when he saw a figure moving towards him. It stopped close enough that he could see it wasn’t Jacob – for it was too thin – but not close enough to allow him to make out a face.
‘Be not afraid,’ a soft voice said.
Panic rose inside Charlie, and he turned to run, but his feet slipped from under him, and he fell on his back. Glancing behind him, he saw that the figure had disappeared. Then he heard a noise like the fluttering of wings and looked ahead, his eyes widening with fear.
The figure, wearing a long cloak, was standing a few feet away from him, a hood covering its head.
‘My name is Candra,’ the figure said.
‘How did you ...? You were just ...’ Charlie staggered to his feet.
‘I do not wish to harm you, Charlie,’ Candra said.
Charlie paused. That voice ... It sounded so familiar. He caught his breath in his throat. It can’t be. ‘How do you know my name?’ he asked in a shaky voice.
‘I have known you your whole life. I am here to protect you. I’m aware you are unnerved right now, but try to remain calm. The last thing we need is an earthquake.’
Charlie thought back to the tremor he had felt inside the canteen on his first day of school, and his breathing accelerated. His legs trembled as he took slow steps away from the woman.
‘Listen carefully,’ Candra said. ‘The talisman you saw. You need it. You must restore it ...’ She broke off, and an urgent edge crept into her voice. ‘You are not listening. Focus.’
Charlie clenched his eyes shut. She’s not real. Wake up. He opened his eyes, and the woman was still there. His heart kicked into overdrive when she disappeared and reappeared in front of him, leaving only inches between them. Seeing her intense green eyes, her face slashed with scars, he screamed.
No sooner had he tried to run than a violent windstorm assailed him. The snow and the dead leaves on the ground rose with the wind, attacking him. He fell once, twice, three times but got back up again.
As the wind grew stronger, it picked him up and threw him backwards. He hit the ground hard. Lying on his back, he heard faint footsteps. Soon, a blurry figure was standing over him. Then darkness swallowed him.
