Sixteen-year-old Allyssa appears to be the ideal princess of Emperion--she's beautiful, elegant, and refined. She spends her days locked in a suffocating cage, otherwise known as the royal court. But at night, Allyssa uses her secret persona--that of a vigilante--to hunt down criminals and help her people firsthand.

Unfortunately, her nightly escapades will have to wait because the citizens of Emperion may need saving from something much bigger than common criminals. War is encroaching on their kingdom and in order to protect her people, Allyssa may have to sacrifice her heart. Forced to entertain an alliance through marriage with a handsome prince from a neighboring kingdom, she finds herself feeling even more stifled than before. To make matters worse, the prince has stuck his nosy squire, Jarvik, to watch her every move.

Jarvik is infuriating, bossy and unfortunately, the only person she can turn to when she unveils a heinous plot. Together, the unlikely pair will have to work together to stop an enemy that everyone thought was long gone, one with the power to destroy her family and the people of Emperion. Now the cage Allyssa so longed to break free from might just be the one thing she has to fight to keep intact. In order to save her kingdom, she will have to sacrifice her freedom, her heart, and maybe even her life.

Cage of Deceit- I skipped right over writing a review for Cage of Deceit and just picked up Cage of Darkness because I just HAD to read the next one. I read both straight thru in less than 48 hours! I loved every minute of it and I lost a lot of sleep over it but I'd do it again! I would have read the third book if it was out by now too!!

Allysa proves that she is a kick butt kind of Princess. She is loyal, kind and very brave! She just feels like she is in a cage being a Princess. She just wants to continue to sneak out with her best friend Gravick and catch thieves at night. She is nimble and good at it! She loves her parents and knows that she will marry someone for a political move but hopes that she will find the love her own parents had as well.

When Prince Odar from Fren comes with his squire Jarvick to present a marriage contract with her so that the two kingdoms with be united to fight against the impending war from Russek, she finds him handsome but somewhat boorish! But the squire, Jarvick is impossible to deal with. They really dislike each other and I didn't think either would see any good in the other but feelings change.

By the end of the book, Allysa has told lies and she has been given lies by so many her mind can't keep up with it all. But Allysa doesn't get all the information from everyone before she is off to Fren for Prince Odar's parents to accept her first. And as I am learning, the author loves to leave you hanging in the end. Thank goodness, I have an arc of the second book to quench my thirst for this amazing series!

I love all the little hints of things, the inner workings of Allysa's mind. The book is totally in her third person POV. The book is fast paced and filled with action, a little romance, intrigue and politics.

I have found another favorite author and can't wait to read more of her work. I have read another book of hers and knew she would be amazing and I'm glad I read this one too!!

Cage of Darkness- Warning: Do not read until you have read Cage of Deceit first. You are forewarned

When an assassin finds Odar and Allysa on the road to Fren, he takes them as POW's to Russek. Where all the turmoil and war is originating from. But along the way, Allysa finds clues about this assassin by the way the assassin is greeted and finds there to be some disgruntled people in Russek. Once there, the castle in the cold winter of Russek is dark and she ends up in the dungeon and tortured. Don't worry, nothing sexual!

There is a lot of violence but Russek is known for their barbaric ways. There is some revenge going on here too. And some real crazy revenge too! I am talking really cray cray here!

Along the way, Allysa finds the Prince of Russek to be kind and fair. He only acts different around his family. Which is Allysa's only saving grace.

By the end of the book, I was very sad and mad and totally needing book 3 now! I mean, we are just presented with another twist and bam the end! I want to see a happily ever after and so far it's not happening! But I know that is just the author's way to get you to read on. Still don't like it!

If you like action pack pacing, twists and turns that you didn't expect; people who try to do what is right; kick butt heroes; torture; desire to find love in a marriage; castles; horses; crazy family members; a book that acknowledges when people work out they actually get hot, stinky and sweaty; lost love;books that leave you hanging in the end and fantastic writing that keeps you on the edge of your seat this is it!

On the exterior, Kerdan appeared every bit as bloodthirsty as the king. However, he was a good man on the inside who would one day be a great leader. He wore masks—just like she did. Just like Odar did. “I understand your concern. But it’s not necessary.”
“You’re wrong. We’re a means to an end. Puppets in this performance.”
“If that’s what it takes to get us out of Russek and stop the war, then so be it.”
“Sometimes, you’re too quick to act and reckless.”
Allyssa stiffened. She hadn’t made the bargain with Kerdan without thinking it through. She wasn’t a fool. “You don’t have to participate in the plan. Go back to Shelene and play the doting fiancĂ©.”
He ignored her outburst, as if he hadn’t heard a word of it. “And you’re loyal beyond belief. You’d walk through fire for those you love.”
“Your point?” she snapped. Once they married, would all their conversations be so heated and exhausting?
He reached up, cupping her cheek. “Both Prince Kerdan and Soma know I care for you. What if they use that against us? All either one has to do is put a knife to your throat, and I’m powerless.”
Allyssa understood his fear—she had it too. There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for Odar, her parents, or her kingdom. That was how love worked. She knew her heart couldn’t stay locked in a cage, shielded from everything. “It’s not like you can stop loving me just to protect me,” she whispered. “Love doesn’t work that way.” He closed his eyes. “Odar?” she asked, wondering what he was thinking. He wasn’t . . . afraid . . . to love her, was he?
