Secrets . . .

Angry because her father, Louisiana Senator Jacob Windsor, has announced his engagement to Hollywood starlet Kara Bordeaux, Julia Windsor decides she’d rather leave home than be subjected to heightened security and a deluge of paparazzi. She travels to Singapore, severs all communication with those she’s left behind, and chooses to live a life of anonymity.

When Julia meets handsome Gabriel Davenport, she keeps her true purpose for being in Singapore a secret. The friendship that develops quickly evolves into something much deeper.

Julia marvels that she’s traveled halfway around the world to find love with an American man. But will that love endure when she discovers that Gabriel is a former Special Forces sergeant hired by her father to protect her?

Julia wasn’t the only woman in the lobby who’d noticed the handsome man standing in the queue at the check-in desk. A tall, blond Scandinavian beauty browsing the concierge’s brochure rack couldn’t seem to keep her gaze off him either. Even after her male companion gave her a nudge and a wrinkle-browed scowl, the Viking princess continued to ogle the choice cut of manhood across the way. Julia almost laughed. “Careful, Hildegard,” she whispered under her breath, “puff that chest out any further and your brass bra will rip through that silk top of yours.”
Legs crossed in a cushy chair under one of the four clocks in the center of the cavernous room, Julia tried to concentrate on the e-book on her lap, but her gaze drifted again and again to the nice-looking stranger. When he turned for another glance around the lobby, she pretended to read. After counting to ten in her head, she looked up again.
The man was now at the desk handing some papers and a blue passport to Mr. Wu, the clerk who serviced the counter on weekday mornings. A blue passport? Hers was blue. Perhaps the new arrival was an American.
Julia rose, strolled across the marble floor, and fell into queue behind the man. A cursory look in the direction of the concierge didn’t find the blond or the fellow she was with.
Mr. Wu leaned to the side, his smile as cheerful as ever. “May I help you, Miss Windsor?”
“Thank you, but I can wait until you’re finished serving this gentleman.”
Mr. Handsome made a quarter turn, scanned her with deep blue eyes, and smiled. Not a huge smile, or a small one either, but a perfect, magazine-cover manly smile that she couldn’t seem to peel her eyes away from.
With an open hand, he invited her to step up to the desk. “Why don’t you go ahead? I’m not in a hurry.”
Her palms moistened. Two steps. That’s all the traveling time she had to conjure up a reason for being there. She approached the desk and stared into Mr. Wu’s waiting face. “I, uh…I was wondering if you have any mail for me today.” There. That was reasonable, even if she didn’t expect any mail.
“I’d be happy to check for you, Miss Windsor. One moment please.” Mr. Wu left her alone with the newcomer.
Julia snuck another brief look. The shadow of whiskers on his face highlighted his virility and intensified his allure. If she could just get a conversation started, maybe he’d help carry it. Smile, Julia. And say something. Her lips twitched into a smile of sorts. “Have you just arrived in Singapore, or are you transferring from another hotel?”
“Just got here.”
So much for him carrying the conversation.

Irene Onorato was born and raised in Bronx, New York. Her father, a first-generation American whose parents were born in Italy, was an Army veteran who had served with the 178th combat engineers during WWII. He told numerous stories of battles, hardships, tragedies and triumphs. The glimpses he gave into the hearts of many American warriors would later become the inspiration for much of Irene’s writings.

In 1972, a few months after graduating high school, Irene met James Onorato, a soldier who had just returned from Vietnam. After dating two weeks, they married, raised three children, and are still happily married today.

Irene and James, both radiation protection technicians, retired from the nuclear power industry in 2014 and now reside in Louisiana.
