Rise (The Order of the Krigers #1) by Jennifer Anne Davis.
Audience/Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance.
Publication: May 17th 2016 by Month9Books.
The people of Nelebek live in fear of persecution from the evil Morlet, who reigns with a dark and destructive magic. The kingdom’s only hope lies with the Order of the Krigers—twelve warriors with mysterious powers linked to magical weapons.

For over a century, Morlet has been annihilating the Order, picking them off one by one. Eleven Krigers have been hunted down, tortured, and imprisoned in his dungeon. Now, only one remains.

Sixteen-year-old Kaia survives by keeping her head down and minding her own business. But when she finds herself in the middle of a public execution where the mysterious Morlet is in attendance, an odd compulsion she can’t resist comes over her.

Kaia looks into Morlet’s eyes.

Soon, an ancient power awakens and Kaia can no more blend into the scenery. Will she heed the call of the Krigers or will Morlet’s dark magic destroy the last of the Order?

Amazing! This book had me at the prologue! Everything about this book was awesome from the descriptions of the scenery, the characters personalities, the plot, the writing, the twists and turns, ugh, everything! I was held captive reading it! I didn’t want it to end! If I could give it 10 stars I would!

The story has a romance but with a twist in that there is an obvious choice who she should be with but the author teases you into can or will she or won’t she go for this other character or two! It is genius! There is so much riding on her decision.

I don’t think I can tell you how much I enjoyed it. I literally couldn’t put it down!

Ok, so we have the prologue at the beginning to set the stage. Then it goes many years later! We have a girl, Kaia, who is the daughter to a miner father who isn’t doing well from working in the mines for so long. He is always training his daughter how to protect herself and has daily training with him. Then the next thing you know, she finds herself being more than she thought she was and not just an ordinary 16 year old.

There is a kingdom with an evil ruling King named Morlet who obtained the magic from a Heks (think witch). She is evil. They both have lived over several people’s lifetimes. They are almost immortal. There was a curse put on a girl from the good Heks. This good Heks made 12 Krigers. When they got together and linked their magic together they would defeat the evil King and restore the balance of good and evil. But if one dies then another one would be born in its place and continue until all are together. The thing was no one knew who the 12th Kriger was. It was always a girl from Kaia’s family.

Kaia though was totally oblivious until one day when she was out and the king was willing to torture an innocent toddler for information on the 12th Kriger. Kaia couldn’t stand for that and when she locked eyes with Morlet she knew that she was the 12th Kriger and he knew who she was as well. Now the hunt begins.

Kaia is saved by Anders an assassin. I am team Anders by the way! They escape the walls of the Capital and travel for several days to Vidar’s home in the trees. There she trains to be the warrior she needs to be and then to find her weapon where her magic will become stronger. But Kaia is stronger than the others. Kaia believes in the good and choices and strongly believes against killing. I like her character. She can also communicate with Morlet while asleep. But there is a medallion that belongs to Vidar that shields her from his intrusion to her dreams but not dreams as they are sort of real in a magical sense. Confusing I know. So, she has to sleep near it which means always being near Anders or Vidar. They both are keeping secrets from Kaia. But she trusts them both and she kind of likes Anders but she doesn’t know what to do about that. Morlet is also sweet talking to Kaia and he likes her too. Kaia senses the good in Morlet as well. Then Vidar stakes a claim on Kaia as well. You will have to read it to see more about that.

So, if you want lots of action, getting to hang out and learn from an assassin, finding the good in others, family, good vs. evil, lots of really good twists and turns, a book that promises more to come, a little chivalry, magic, swimming, tunnels, learning combat skills, an eerie ending, and a hint as to what she is going to do in the romance department because none of her options are possible, than this might be a book for you. As for me, I’m all in and team Anders for me!! Consequences be damned!
