Emerge (Mer Chronicles #1)
by Tobie Easton.
Audience/Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy.
Publication: April 19th 2016 by Month9Books, LLC.
Lia Nautilus may be a Mermaid but she’s never lived in the ocean. War has ravaged the seven seas ever since the infamous Little Mermaid unleashed a curse that stripped Mer of their immortality. Lia has grown up in a secret community of land-dwelling Mer hidden among Malibu’s seaside mansions. Her biggest problems are surviving P.E. and keeping her feelings for Clay Ericson in check. Sure, he’s gorgeous in that cocky, leather jacket sort of way and makes her feel like there’s a school of fish swimming in her stomach, but getting involved with a human could put Lia's entire community at risk.

So it’s for the best that he’s dating that new girl, right? That is, until Lia finds out she isn't the only one at school keeping a potentially deadly secret. And this new girl? Her eyes are dead set on Clay, who doesn't realize the danger he's in. If Lia hopes to save him, she’ll have to get closer to Clay. Lia’s parents would totally flip if they found out she was falling for a human boy, but the more time she spends with him, the harder it is for her to deny her feelings. After making a horrible mistake, Lia will risk everything to stop Clay from falling in love with the wrong girl.

Guest Post: Official Music Playlist

1-“Kiss Me” by Sixpence None the Richer
For me, this song conjures up the whimsy, sparkle, and magic of a first kiss. It’s what my main character feels during all the happiest parts of Emerge.

2-“The Old Ways” by Loreena McKennitt
This is the song I listen to most before I sit down to write the Mer Chronicles. It captures the dark, ancient allure of the sea and of mermaids. To me, this is a siren song.

3-“California Gurls” by Katy Perry
Lia wants to be everything described in this song: A carefree, normal girl who fits into her Malibu surroundings and could dance around in daisy dukes while feeling sexy instead of self-conscious.

4-“California” by Phantom Planet
Another California song that—thanks to The O.C.—evokes not only a glamorous beach setting but also teen romance brimming with tension.

5-“Bittersweet Symphony” by The Verve
Clay, the boy Lia loves, is a musician who aspires to become a composer. This is his favorite song and reveals a lot about his style and personality.

6-“Close Your Eyes” (the Buffy/Angel Theme) by Christopher Beck
I’m a Spike girl myself, but this song gets me in the right mindset to write heart wrenching, forbidden love.

Enjoy the playlist? Let me know! I’d love to say hi on Twitter or IG ☺
