After a car accident stole his dreams of pro football, JT McKinney has made a new life for himself far away from his old one. He spends his time in a prosthetic research and development facility, his attention on machines instead of people until a chance meeting with a young mother and her five year old daughter who need his help. He'll have to let go of the past if he wants a future.

Ms Conner’s writing just draws me in like an old friend. Her stories have a way to grab you in and relax you. Her characters are more than just good looks. They have dimension and are family oriented. This book just makes it better with the main character and the five year old daughter of the woman he cares for are both amputees. The bond there is so sweet and I couldn’t read it fast enough! And it ended all too soon!

He had a quiet, easy way about him. There was no swagger, he didn't saunter-though looking like he did, he most definitely could have. Could have sauntered, sashayed, skipped, or even flown and any woman in his vicinity would have fallen into his arms, their eyes glassing over.

JT is a man that has held on to guilt from the events leading to his car accident. He was a football player in college and he had dreams. Those dreams were lost with his loss of part of his leg after the accident. He went to rehab far far away from home. Now he is a successful bioengineer and working on patents for prosthetics. He is into high tech. His best friend also has lost both of his legs. They work hard. Jake though, doesn’t play hard. So when he sees Paige in a diner and watches her help a man read a menu he is captivated by her.

Paige is a single mom. Her daughter came by way of a pushy boyfriend in a drunken moment. It was the only time she has ever had sex. She lives her life for her daughter. She works two jobs and goes to school. She doesn’t have time for dating. She barely has time for sleeping or eating. Her daughter, JT noticed while in the diner, has part of a leg missing too.

So, they both are attracted to each other but both have complicated lives. Jake/JT is a good man and sees that Paige’s daughter, Casey, is not wearing her prosthetic and offers to take a look at it in his office. Casey takes to Jake like mud to a pig! He has a missing leg too! One visit at his office isn’t enough for either Paige or Casey or JT either and JT finds ways to keep seeing them. Then Paige and JT have one kiss that leads to another. Paige is falling. JT is falling. But both are scared. Casey, that little girl is too much…

Paige narrowed her eyes in the direction he’d pointed. “Nothing. I just…I can’t believe she left me.” “Why?” he asked, confused by her somewhat panicked expression. “Maybe ‘cause Jenny said you’re too hot and I’m not big enough to be chap-a-rone,” Casey told him. “I’m not hot are you?”

Put Paige and Casey and JT in with the McKinney clan and everyone is playing cupid! Plus, we get to see the other McKinney brothers and catch up with them.

I love this story. I love the gradual building of their relationship. I loved how Casey just wormed her way into JT’s heart. The ending is adorable. Now I just want another brother’s story!

My only hang up is the cover. It doesn't really go with the book.

If you like high tech prosthetics, horses, Italian food, the beach, falling in love, big families, worrying about going to kindergarten, kids, then this might be for you!

Book Blitz & Giveaway: Rising Ridge by Alexa Jacobs

Rising Ridge by Alexa Jacobs.
Audience/Genre: New Adult, Contemporary.
Publication: October 30th 2015 by CreateSpace.
Olivia Reynolds was free. Twenty years old, living in New York City, and having absolutely no idea what she wanted to be when she grew up, every day would be an adventure, or at least that was the plan. When a phone call from her brother lands her back in her home town, and dealing with an unexpected tragedy, she comes face to face her brother’s best friend Dean and realizes that the feelings she had buried long ago were still there. Dean Winston has lived with the fact that Olivia walked out of his life two years ago, and was never coming back. With her back in town, he struggles to be the friend that she needs him to be, and not the lover that she once wanted him to be. With lines between childhood friends and secret lovers once again blurring, Olivia must decide between the possibilities of her future and the ties of her past. Some strings just refuse to be cut.

They sat in silence for a while. Dean was good at that; he had always been good at that. At first, Olivia was so thankful for it. Her parents were always talking at her. What to do, where to go, what to wear. Their pursuit of the perfect children seemed relentless. Connor had always wanted to just help her do the things they asked her to do, and Elle was ready at a moment’s notice with an escape from life plan. Somehow, whenever she was looking for something that fell in the in-between, Dean was always the gentle hand holding her steady.
Now, the silence was maddening. Somewhere along the line, she realized he would always be there for her if she reached out to him, but she wasn’t sure he really wanted to be. She made him that. Just like her parents, she gave him a role he did not ask for and that does not fit.
What frustrated her, what caused the abyss of silence between them, was she knew if she reached for his hand right now, he would take it. If she laid her head on his shoulder, he would rest his head on hers. If she put her hand on his chest, she would feel his slow and steady heartbeat begin to quicken and lose its pace. She put him in the role she wanted him to fill, but he let her. It was moments like those when she wasn’t sure if his were the arms she would be safe in, or if they were the arms that would dance her to the furthest edge of a cliff and then let go. She hated herself for the itch she felt in her fingers to reach out for his hands, only inches from hers, and she hated him because she knew he would allow it if she did.
Two years. She had put two years and a few hundred miles between them, and it was all for nothing. She had fooled herself into thinking that she was over him and had moved on. She didn’t think of him in her life in New York. It was true that she had not dated, but she was giving herself time to get to know the Olivia who had never gotten a chance to live. She was happy there, and had the promise of everything she had ever dreamed of. She looked at him as he sat silently looking at the stars, and realized she had never gotten over him. It was just a room in her heart where she had turned off the lights and closed the door. It was still there, in the darkness, as big and complicated as it had always been.

Publication: February 18th 2016 by Clean Reads.
Dying wasn’t a choice. For Sophia, it was a need.

Seventeen-year-old Sophia Bandell is scared of boys, and her biggest fear is dying. Boys make her uncomfortable and itchy and dying is …well …dying. She is ecstatic when her long lost friend calls her, inviting her to spend the summer with her on the beach at Charleston, South Carolina.

When a plastic saucer hits her in the head as she’s sunbathing, Sophia has no idea it will forever change the course of her life. It is there she comes face to face with the impressive Tate Forester.

She is scared and …itchy, but he’s gorgeous and she can’t shake him from her mind. They begin dating and Sophia soon knows he’s the one.
But things turn dark when she learns Tate isn’t the person she thinks he is, and the real reason her friend has brought her to the beach will teach her about life after death.

This everlasting summer on the beach gives Sophia a sweet taste of first love—the happiness as well as the heartbreak.

We stood there and looked around, an awkward silence playing between us. Then he stepped closer and took my hand in his, sending a bolt of staggering electricity zipping through my chest. “Her hand fits perfectly in mine.” He whispered this, as if confirming it with someone. His gaze locked on it, analyzing, then with a shake of his head, he spoke louder. “Sophia, I’m sorry. I …I lied to you.”
I looked at him—bewilderment crinkling my face—and tried to understand. “Lied?” My voice broke. “I don’t get it.”
“I wasn’t sick that day. Well, in a way I was, I guess. The truth is, I was gut-sick. That guy …he was sitting by you the whole day ...and …and he never left your side. I’d check throughout the day, but he was still there. I couldn’t help it. I was insanely jealous.” He looked down, his tone deepening as he flexed his fingers that were still laced through mine.
“What?” His words astounded me. I swiped my brow with my free hand. “You were jealous …of me?”
He released my hand and paced back and forth, the nervousness seeping through as he wrung his hands. “I know it’s stupid, but I couldn’t help myself. I love the way you laugh and …I like you, Sophia …a lot, and it hurt me to see you with someone else.”
He lifted his hair off his forehead, pushing it up. His eyes locked on mine again, captivating me. I couldn’t look away. My self-consciousness took over—heckling me. The way I looked right now—with my hair a matted mess from the mist, and no makeup on—must look ridiculous. I drew away, making myself smaller.
I laughed my nervous laugh and kicked the sand with my shoe. “Who, him? You mean …Brian?” My words wobbled, but I giggled, unable to believe that Brian talking to me could make anyone jealous.

A new adult romance from Entangled's Embrace imprint...

To gain a chance at heaven, they'll need to embrace hell…

Descended from Cain, the world's first murderer, Jax Flynn is destined to spend his life making others suffer. To shield the world from horrific chaos, he was forced to sacrifice the one and only thing he loved. Samantha Merrick.

Sam is special. She doesn't know how--or why--and she hasn't had any luck finding out. But there's a bright side to her life. She finally has Jax back. Sort of. They're living life on a strict look but don't touch policy, but with the explosive chemistry between them, keeping their hands to themselves is getting harder every day.

Unfortunately, keeping their libidos in check isn't Jax and Sam's biggest problem. When an enemy from the past resurfaces with an ultimatum--complete a simple task or Sam dies--they're backed into a corner. The goal? Kill a demon called Malphi. The problem? Jax's demon, Azirak, has no intention of letting that happen…

Reviewed by Kelly.

This is definitely a darker book. It is good vs. evil with so many twists that I got whiplash! If you haven’t read Ruined first then this won’t make a lot of sense. You need to read it first. Although, I did appreciate the author putting some reminders in my head of some events from the first book!

Chase and Jax hatred toward the other brother hasn't changed and now Chase has trapped Sam with a bracelet/cuff. If she doesn’t do his bidding the bracelet will kill her in 72 hours. The race is on to find Malphi, kill the demon and to figure out who can help take the cuff off her.

The book spans three days and it is nothing but constant action and betrayal and half truths. Now, Jax and Sam don’t know who to trust and time is winding down. Sam is a “Pure” one and everyone wants her. She doesn’t understand it and the next three days she learns that everyone wants her to control that power. But she doesn’t even understand it at first and the more she learns the more hopeless things seem. And who exactly is Malphi?

Jax /Azi are becoming more of their own identities in this book. Jax has to share his body with Azirack a demon of royal blood. Jax’s brother, Chase, also shares his body with a demon. The two demons are sworn enemies, and of royal demon blood, making Chase and Jax enemies. Azi seems to have a soft spot when it comes to Samantha. Don’t underestimate Azi though. He will kill you! The POV in this book covers both Sam and Jax. Even though Jax doesn’t always have a say, Jax will let the reader know what Azi is thinking.

Add to the demon mix are some angels who have fallen. They want Sam too!

This book has graphic demon thoughts and a lot of “F” words as it is very dark. So reader beware.
If you like constant action and betrayals, dark books, fallen angels, demons, lots of twists and turns, and an ending that promises you will want the next book now then this is it!

Jax Flynn’s life just went from bad to worse. He was already sharing his body with a demon named Azirak, but after killing its mate… Well, shit got real. Now the demon has taken control of Jax’s body and everything he cares for is at stake, including Samantha, the girl he loves. Yeah, that’s not going to happen. It’s time Jax showed everyone what he was really made of.

This is not my normal go to genre. I don’t know why I was so drawn to this series. I only know that I loved the characters and some of the redeeming qualities of Azi and the love Jax has for Samantha.

The battle between good and evil ensues in this last Chapter of the series. There is nonstop action and twists and turns. Every time they turn around something new is revealed and sometimes Sam feels hopeless. But there is also a new character introduced that gives Sam some hope. Time is ticking and Jax is fading and Sam can’t stop now to find the stone and try to release her “pure” powers to find a way to make Azi leave Jax’s body and for them to have a normal life. If that’s even possible!

Heckle, also known as Abel from the Bible, is the balancer in life and he seems to pop up at the most bizarre and critical moments to balance things out and to trade for things to keep it even. They always make the trade of whatever he wants just to get them safe, even if they know that it will bite them in the butt later.

Since Jax killed Azi’s mate, Azi punished Jax by not allowing him to surface. Jax is aware of what is going on but is unable to do anything about it. When Azi pretends to be Jax and tries to seduce Sam to get her cooperation in finding a stone that belongs to Azi, Jax becomes furious and finds that for a moment, he was able to take control. But only for a moment. Azi is impressed with it since no one has ever been able to take back control in all his lives. Azi respects Jax for that but it is too late for it because now that Azi has suppressed Jax he has little time to survive before Azi totally takes over Jax and Jax just stops existing. Jax is not going to stop trying! Azi does give them some time to be alone before Jax dies. Those moments are sweet and tender. And also with graphic intimate moments.

There is a bond between Jax and Sam and Azi sees it and feels it. Shoot Azi is also in love with Sam. Azi is intrigued by it and has left Sam an inheritance. He also vows to always protect her.

My only issues were that it kind of ended quickly. It was just too easy after all the conflict. I mean that the resolve was too easy after so many twists and turns for this to just happen. But it still gave me the ending I wanted so I didn’t balk too much. The other was that sometimes in the past two books things would pop up that it seemed that everyone else but Sam, Jax/Azi knew about. It happened a lot. For those with strong Christian backgrounds, you may not want to read it since Abel kind of straddles the line sometimes, even though he can only balance good and bad. There are fallen angels like Michael and Gabriel.

If possible, I would venture to say that Azi is a good demon from hell. He doesn’t make decisions lightly. He is still evil but there might be some redemption for him someday.

As I stated earlier, Azi, does have his good qualities and listens to and senses Jax and Sam’s relationship and their qualities. When he is in control of Jax, Sam learns how to tell the difference and everyone can see the different personalities between Jax and Azi. Sam wants little to do with Azi but senses that Azi cares for her too. He will take care of Sam. Jax is a little jealous of it but doesn’t voice it. I love Sam’s dialogs with Azi, there is snark and disgust and some kind moments.

If you like nonstop action, twists and turns, not knowing who to trust in a book, betrayals, good vs. evil, climbing in trees, magic, demons, a bond between two people that is so deep and tender, big ugly dogs that are vicious, an ending that you sigh from because you can now breath after so much turmoil has resolved, characters from the Bible that may be different than you would think, than this might just be for you.

Book Reviews: Cadence Duology by Katie Hamstead

Deceptive Cadence (Cadence #1) by Katie Hamstead.
Audience/Genre: Adult, Fantasy.
Publication: June 2015 by REUTS Publications, LLC.
Cadence Anderson has the perfect definition of happily ever after . . .

Until she doesn't. A freak earthquake shatters her life as surely as her home, taking away everything she holds dear. She wakes in a hospital to find that her beloved husband and infant daughter have been killed, crushed by the earthquake's wrath. Disoriented, injured, and alone, Cadence refuses to accept the loss. So when a man claiming to be her guardian angel appears and offers her a chance to go back in time to save her family, she doesn't need to give it a second thought. She accepts.

Thrust back eleven years, she now faces the ordeal of high school all over again. But this time, she's armed with all the knowledge of her adult life and the determination to do everything better, from preventing the loss of her best friend to avoiding her original, drama-inducing boyfriends. She's focused solely on Austin, her future husband, and is content to bide her time until she meets him again.

But then James Gordon crosses her path. Cadence wants to remain single, but James has his sights set. He is determined to win her over, and he's very hard to resist. As Cadence starts to develop unwanted feelings for him, she realizes he threatens to disrupt everything, changing the future and distracting her from her original goal. Now, Cadence must choose: deny the unpredictable and exciting path James offers her, or stay true to the life she had and is trying desperately to resurrect. Second chances are more complicated than they seem.

Deceptive Cadence combines the soaring emotion of a heartfelt romance with the innovative storytelling of magical realism, crafting a uniquely moving, intricate tale about love and loss that asks: what would you do if given the chance to right all your wrongs?

Reviewed by Kelly.

Haven’t you ever wondered if you could go back with the knowledge you have now what would you do differently? I know I have! That’s what hooked me into reading this book.

Now with the knowledge of her adult life and the loss of her husband and daughter she goes back to high school which is several years before she met her husband. Right then I would have had red flags. Why do I need to go that far back?

Cadence knows some of the things she wants to change and she does. She becomes happier and better for it. But in the process, she catches the attention of James Gordon. Well, she had his attention before but due to circumstances then, they never really knew each other. He was in a bad group of kids. But now that she dodges the boyfriends from her past, he steps in and cleans up his act. He relentlessly pursues her. She sees his changes and is attracted to him. She gives in and there starts a 3+ year span of them together before the end of the first book.

Because of her future being slightly hazy while in her past self she lives mostly in her new now. But at the stroke of midnight every New Year, her fuardian Angel who gave her this option to go back in time and try to save her family, returns and time freezes for everyone but her and they review the year and go over her goals. When he physically touches her shoulder that gives her all her feelings of her adult life back to her. She asks about things and goes over her concerns. The longer she is with James the harder it becomes to stay on track. She is also given a scrapbook of her husband and their lives from the time she goes back. She looks over it often and looks at the picture of her, her husband Austen and her baby girl Melody. She is also told she cannot try to change events like 9-11 and can’t tell anyone things about them or time will go back to where she was after she lost her husband and daughter.

This book has haunted me since I finished it. I keep wondering what her next choices will be. I am afraid to read the next one because I want her to choose James. But would I do that knowing that would mean my daughter would be lost to me forever? That just blows my mind up! And we are just getting to the point where she will meet Austen again. But I agreed to review them both so I have to read it. So here I go……

Diverging Cadence (Cadence #2)
Publication: August 25, 2015.
When Cadence Anderson woke to find her husband and infant daughter had been killed, she thought her life was over. Instead, she was offered a second chance and sent back in time to do it all again.

She’s made the most of this opportunity, repairing her relationship with the best friend she lost the first time, avoiding the romantic mistakes she made originally, and even bringing her family closer together. But she’s also done something she wasn’t planning on—she’s fallen in love with someone other than her future husband.

Stepping onto a plane and flying across country to attend university is the hardest decision she’s had to make. But unless she follows through with it, her future with Austin might never happen. And what becomes of her beautiful baby if she stays with James, the man she was never supposed to love?

The only thing she knows for certain is that she has to see Austin again, and she’s intent on reliving that part of her previous life exactly like she did the first time. Even if that means she has to lie to James to do it. Because, deep down, she can’t quite bring herself to let him go.

Now, past and future are about to collide, and Cadence has to make her final choice—follow the uncertain path of a life with James, or the one she came back to save . . . with Austin.

In this emotional conclusion to the story that began in Deceptive Cadence, relationships will be tested, identities revealed, and the past will overshadow the future, putting the finishing touches on an unforgettable tale of courage, sacrifice, and, above all, love.

If you haven’t read the first book, this won’t make any sense.
I have to admit it took me a while to read this book. I wanted to read these books to see if given the chance would my choices be different? I hadn’t thought that it would be a love triangle once the second book started. This is where she meets her future husband again. I didn’t want her to meet him again. I actually had to put it down several times and do something else. I couldn’t believe that Cadence could love two people at the same time and cheat on both of them. It irked me and I wanted James to be happy.

By the time I told myself to suck it up and just read it, I found myself conflicted like Cadence and wanted James and Austin to be happy. I didn’t know how to feel. The author was very good at making you fall in love with both of them. I’m glad I wasn’t in her shoes! I didn’t know what the author would do but I couldn’t see this ending well for one of them.

What I really didn’t see coming was the twist at the end that brought me to tears. It was the perfect ending. I really didn’t think that it would be possible to have a perfect ending but it did. And that’s all I’m going to say because if you’ve read the first you have to read the second book. You might have to put it down and walk away because you may feel disgusted by Cadence or mad at the author, but you need to finish it so you can see how it ended, because it is worth it! It is a great book on love and second chances. I loved it! This is definitely a book that will be read again!!
