Only Bauer Grant can pull off gorgeous while dead. But staying dead is another thing entirely. When he wakes up at his own funeral, the town of Mystique calls it a miracle, until it happens again. Something is bringing the residents of Mystique back to life, but what? Presley Caine finds herself caught up in the mystery when Bauer asks her to visit him. Presley can’t figure out why the most popular guy in school is so drawn to her. And when Bauer is kidnapped soon after, she looks to Bauer’s brooding best friend Sam, whose dad works for the powerful Mystique military base, for answers. In her quest to discover the truth, Presley’s relationship with Sam deepens, her feelings for Bauer are tested, and it becomes clear that her own mysterious past is somehow connected to these strange events. But is she strong enough to handle the truth when it is finally revealed?

Mystique Playlist...

When I’m working on a book the first thing I do is figure out the “feel” or “atmosphere” of the book. Most of the time this involves listening to music. For MYSTIQUE I listened to a lot of Bon Iver, Feist, Fleet Foxes, Frightened Rabbit, Local Natives and Loney, Dear. But the album I listened to on repeat, the one that most of the songs directly inspired scenes for MYSTIQUE, is Go by Jónsi. I listened to the song, Grow Till Tall, while writing the scene where Presley is running from the soldiers. Even now when I hear it I see her running across an open field while helicopters circle overhead.

Songs:

Graveyard by Feist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbnHmFKxPgA
White Winter Hymnal by Fleet Foxes- You Tube

Your Protector by Fleet Foxes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtVPJVxqcS8

The Loneliness and the Scream by Frightened Rabbit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1Lf7mriehU
Blindsided by Bon Iver https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaFXrOZDMBA
Grow Till Tall by Jónsi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQuz8jmUYDU

These songs really helped create the mood I needed to write. And when I wasn’t writing I listened to them as well to help me brainstorm. Not to be dramatic or anything, but without music I wouldn’t find what I’m looking for. It inspires every scene in my head.
