Brought together by disaster. Kept together by love.

In the aftermath of a deadly earthquake, it's chaos for trauma surgeon Jessica Hansen. Among the many victims, one patient stands out—San Diego Police K-9 search and rescue officer Cal Palmer.

Cal vows to help Kayla, a child orphaned by the disaster. But he needs Jessica's help. Will their shared concern for Kayla and for Cal's canine partner, Scout, allow them to put aside their personal torments and discover the difference love can make?

This is a cute clean story. Since I am a nurse, I do like stories with medicine. And this one has a Doctor as the female lead. The male lead is a Police Officer. I have tons of those in my family as well. So, I felt at home while reading it. I just wished I had the beach house that our main guy, Cal, did!

Cal moved to San Diego after his ex-wife literally shoved him out of her and his daughter’s life! His Ex was bitter and resentful and made Cal look awful so she got full custody. Now his daughter is afraid of him because her mother planted seeds in her head of him. Cal loves his daughter and wants her in his life. Cal also has a search and rescue dog named Scout. He is an amazing dog. When Cal becomes hurt during a rescue after an earthquake, he needs someone to take Scout while he recovers. Who better than the doctor that triaged him and knew how to handle Scout.

Jessica is a Doctor who has her own demons. She used to be a pediatric surgeon and now does Trauma surgery because of a case several years past with a child that haunts her to this day. She reluctantly takes Scout and so begins a friendship that morphs into maybe more.

As with many people, trust comes with time and feelings get hurt and people don’t always know how to talk about things. So, when someone makes a mistake they aren’t always discussed and then bam, the relationship is strained. So these two have to figure out how to deal with the aftermath.

Cal works on getting his daughter back in his life. Jessica is the one who helps him. There is also a little girl that Cal saved in the beginning whose mother didn’t make it and Cal falls for her and wants to be part of her life too. Jessica also forms an attachment to little Kayla as well.

The story was cute and very believable. I adored the love the father had for his daughter and how Cal also wanted Kayla in his life too! Jessica was nice and encouraging as well. Where I could tell Jessica and Cal cared for each other, I didn’t feel a strong connection between the two. More of a liking to each other and not love. It was probably just me though.
