Books I'm Grateful I Read Giveaway Hop

Welcome to our stop on the Books I'm Grateful I Read Hop. See what books we are grateful we read and enter to win. Then go to the Linky below to see what others are grateful they read....

1- This is Anjana's choice! It was a book she read as a child and got her hooked on reading...

Ella Enchanted
by Gail Carson Levine.
Audience/Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy.
Publication: January 1st 1997.
How can a fairy's blessing be such a curse?

At her birth, Ella of Frell was the unfortunate recipient of a foolish fairy's gift -- the "gift" of obedience. Ella must obey any order given to her, whether it's hopping on one foot for a day and a half, or chopping off her own head! But strong-willed Ella does not tamely accept her fate. Against a bold backdrop of princes, ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, and fairy godmothers, Ella goes on a quest to break the curse -- once and for all.

In this incredible debut novel comes the richly entertaining story of Ella of Frell, who at birth was given the gift of obedience by a fairy. Ella soon realizes that this gift is little better than a curse, for how can she truly be herself if at anytime anyone can order her to hop on one foot, or cut off her hand, or betray her kingdom'and she'll have to obey? Against a bold tapestry of princes, ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, and fairy godmothers, Ella's quest to break the curse once and for all and discover who she really is is as sharply funny as Catherine, Called Birdy and as richly poignant as Beauty, and has all the marks of a classic in the making.

2- This is another of Anjana's choices.....

The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle #1)
by Patrick Rothfuss.
Audience/Genre: Adult, Fantasy.
Publication: March 27th 2007 by Penguin Group DAW.
Told in Kvothe's own voice, this is the tale of the magically gifted young man who grows to be the most notorious wizard his world has ever seen. The intimate narrative of his childhood in a troupe of traveling players, his years spent as a near-feral orphan in a crime-ridden city, his daringly brazen yet successful bid to enter a legendary school of magic, and his life as a fugitive after the murder of a king form a gripping coming-of-age story unrivaled in recent literature. A high-action story written with a poet's hand, The Name of the Wind is a masterpiece that will transport readers into the body and mind of a wizard.

3- This is Kelly's Young Adult choice....

Jesse's Girl (Hundred Oaks)
by Miranda Kenneally.
Audience/Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary Romance.
Publication: July 7th 2015 by Sourcebooks Fire.
Everyone at Hundred Oaks High knows that career mentoring day is a joke. So when Maya Henry said she wanted to be a rock star, she never imagined she’d get to shadow *the* Jesse Scott, Nashville’s teen idol.

But spending the day with Jesse is far from a dream come true. He’s as gorgeous as his music, but seeing all that he’s accomplished is just a reminder of everything Maya’s lost: her trust, her boyfriend, their band, and any chance to play the music she craves. Not to mention that Jesse’s pushy and opinionated. He made it on his own, and he thinks Maya’s playing back up to other people’s dreams. Does she have what it takes to follow her heart—and go solo?

4- This is another one of Kelly's books that she was grateful she read....

Rough Around the Edges Meets Refined (Meet Your Match #2)
by Rachael Anderson.
Audience/Genre: Adult, Contemporary Romance, Clean Read.
Publication: December 15th 2014 by HEA Publishing.
For Noah Mackie, life is finally back on track. He has a great support system, a promised promotion is on its way, and he's finally getting the hang of this single father thing. But when the job falls through and his neighbor's matchmaking efforts become more aggressive, Noah is in for yet another unwanted detour. With his career and two spirited daughters to worry about, he doesn't have time for dating—especially not someone like Cassie Ellis, his girls' beautiful and sophisticated dance instructor, who is about as open and approachable as a brick wall.

Rough around the Edges Meets Refined is about two people who think they know exactly what they want but who have no idea what they really need. It's about learning that people aren't always what they seem and that sometimes life’s detours take you exactly where you need to go.

5- This is another one of Kelly's books she is grateful for. She didn't think she would like it at first but than she fell in love with it...

Lord Fenton's Folly (A Proper Romance #2)
by Josi S. Kilpack.
Audience/Genre: Adult, Regency Romance, Proper Romance, Clean Read.
Publication: October 6th 2015 by Shadow Mountain.
Lord Fenton is a gambler, a dandy, and a flirt—and he must marry or else he will be disinherited, stripped of his wealth and his position. He chooses Alice Stanbridge for two simple reasons: he once knew her as a young girl, and she is the least objectionable option available to him.

However, Alice has harbored feelings for Fenton since their first meeting ten years ago, and she believes his proposal is real. When she discovers it is not, she is embarrassed and hurt. However, a match with the most-eligible bachelor in London would secure not only her future but that of her family as well.

Determined to protect herself from making a fool of herself a second time, Alice matches Lord Fenton wit for wit and insult for insult as they move toward a marriage of convenience that is anything but a happy union. Only when faced with family secrets that have shaped Fenton’s life does he let down his guard enough to find room in his heart for Alice. But can Alice risk her heart a second time?

This guidebook to the Fablehaven magical preserve is filled with everything a new Caretaker might need to know in order to survive. Fully-illustrated, this unique encyclopedia has gathered the world of Fablehaven into one volume.

Scattered throughout the book are colorful fairies that also mark some of the characters, artifacts, and creatures that will be featured in the upcoming sequel series, Dragonwatch.

I loved this series. I have had my kids read it. I've read it! So, when I got an ecopy to review, I was ecstatic! The guide is short in pages. It has great illustrations and details about those that live in Fablehaven.

There are notes in this book from mostly Seth and Kendra. Some were serious comments of things they learned the hard way. Others had me laughing, especially those from Seth.
It brought so many memories from the books back. I really enjoyed it. It isn’t that long. I liked having pictures of what everyone looked like inside of the Author’s head. Most were like how I envisioned it so the author explained it well!

But the ecopy wasn’t enough for me! I had to have it in my hands so I bought a hardcopy for my own library.

Excerpt from Introduction

If you are in possession of this book you are assumed to be the caretaker or an apprentice caretaker of Fablehaven. By now you’ve been introduced to the world of mythical and magical creatures. However, there is still much to learn. Previous caretakers of Fablehaven thought it would be helpful to create aCaretaker’s Guide specifically for those tasked with the job of nurturing, protecting, and surviving this preserve and its inhabitants. Do not be fooled. Fablehaven is an unpredictable and dangerous place. However, the collective knowledge gathered within the pages of this bestiary will give you the knowledge and wisdom needed to not only survive but to thrive. The creatures of Fablehaven are either light or dark, not necessarily good or evil. In order to be good, one must recognize the difference between right and wrong and strive to choose the right. To be truly evil one must do the contrary. Being good or evil is a choice. This is not so with the creatures of Fablehaven. What they are largely governs how they act. Some are inherently builders, some are nurturers, some are playful. Some are inherently destroyers, some are deceivers, some crave power. Some love light, some love darkness. But change their nature, and without much resistance, their identities follow. Like a fairy becoming an imp, or an imp regaining her fairyhood. Much counsel and advice has been passed down through generations and given to the new caretakers of this preserve. Perhaps the most invaluable piece of advice that has ever been given is this: Those who are careful to cause no mischief, work no magic, and inflict no harm are protected by the foundational treaty of Fablehaven. This truth alone may be your strongest ally and your only defense. One final note. The signs leading up to the front gate were not always there. In the late eighteenth century, before the guest register that controls access to Fablehaven was created, two poachers entered the property in search of big game. Needless to say, they found it. Or it found them. Many days later, the resident caretaker found them as well. Or at least he found their bodies of petrified stone. And thus the first signs outside the gates of Fablehaven were posted. As caretaker you have accepted a most noble assignment. Keep your eyes open. Obey with exactness. Take risks only as the last resort and you will have a better chance at seeing another sunrise. Welcome to Fablehaven.

Brandon Mull is the author of the New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal bestselling Beyonders and Fablehaven series. Brandon resides in a happy little valley near the mouth of a canyon with his wife and four children. He spent two years living in the Atacama Desert of Northern Chile where he learned Spanish and juggling. He once won a pudding eating contest in the park behind his grandma’s house, earning a gold medal.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: Before the Storm by Leslie Tentler

No Matter How Far You Run, The Past Will Find You

Leslie Tentler is back with another story of romance and suspense…this time in a small Southern beach town called Rarity Cove. What happens when a woman on the run has her dangerous secrets finally catch up with her? Find out in Before the Storm by Leslie Tentler…

Before the Storm
by Leslie Tentler.
Audience/Genre: Adult, Romantic Suspense.
Publication: October 20th 2015 by Left Field Press.
Six years earlier, Trina Grissom disappeared, on the run for her life. Now living under an assumed identity—as Samantha Marsh—she still struggles with the dark secret she harbors and the fear she might one day be found. When she moves to the coastal town of Rarity Cove, South Carolina, to open a cafĂ©, a handsome widower begins to chip away at the walls she’s built to protect herself.

Mark St. Clair lost his wife two years ago in a tragic accident. Head of the grand St. Clair resort, he distracts himself from his lingering grief by running the family business and caring for his troubled young daughter...until a beautiful restaurateur sets up shop in town. Before meeting Samantha, Mark was convinced he could never be drawn to another woman. But as his attraction to Samantha grows, the mystery surrounding her deepens.

As the two begin a hesitant courtship, double perils emerge. Someone from Samantha’s lurid past comes calling, threatening to expose her. And a powerful hurricane is forming in the Atlantic with the small beach town in its path. Trapped in the storm by the brutal man who wants vengeance on Samantha, she and Mark must fight for their lives.

Reviewed by Kelly.

This reminds me of a Nicolas Spark’s novel, Safe Haven.

Mark runs a very well establish hotel on the coast of sc. He has a sister, a brother, and a mother. His sister and he are very close. His brother and him have had some issues over the years but are ok. His mother is meddling and only wants upper class for her kids who grew up with everything that they needed. Mark and his very young daughter Emily survived a car accident several years ago while watching their mother/wife die during it. Emily hasn’t talked since. Mark still wears his wedding band. Both still clearly traumatized over the loss.

Samantha was once Trina. Trina lived a horrible childhood. Her mother overdosed. Her grandmother preached and did awful things to her. When she ran away, her life then went to nightmarish. She was a stripper and was personal property to its owner. He would beat and rape her. Sometimes makeup would cover his marks sometimes she had to go to the hospital. One day she was able to get away.

Six years later, she has a culinary degree and a small shop called Cafe Bella on the coast of sc. She has put everything into it. She still looks over her shoulder because she knows they are still looking for her. Who is? You will have to read for yourself because there are many little twists to it. She keeps to herself too. She won't burden anyone. But sometimes life has a funny way of making you live and love again.

Emily runs up to her stand on one community event and wants one of her cupcakes at her stand. Mark gets her one. They start talking and then Sam is doing Emily’s birthday party. And with a little push from Mark's siblings and no help from his mother, they go on a date. Sam tells him little about herself and he notices. He would do anything for her. She goes hot and cold with him. Because even though she knows she can't have a relationship with anyone, the heart wants what the heart wants.

Then the signs start pointing to the fact that someone has found her. She is scared. There is a storm coming for the coast too! And the next thing I know because I have holed up in my favorite chair in my bedroom with the lights out and my kindle on, my husband alarm clock goes off as I finish the book! Oops! No sleep for me because yeah, it kept me wanting to see how it would end!

There are explicit details of flashbacks from Sam's previous life before. It still disturbs me. She went through a lot. I like books where someone overcomes something and Sam is strong.

There are twists and turns and love and brotherly contentions, fighting, and those are some of the things that kept me involved in this story. The writing was great and the story utterly believable! I loved the way Mark woke up and started to heal!

So, if you like stories where the bad guys come for you, overcoming abuse, children with stories of watching their parent die and what happens to them, finding love, cupcakes, running on the beach, storms, those that will do anything to help and protect you, the posh life, teddy bears, then this might be for you!

The brooding challenge in his voice—the bare hint of harshness—was disconcerting, something Samantha hadn’t expected, despite her recent behavior. Her initial instinct had been right; she shouldn’t have come here.
“I should go,” she said. Despite her scrambled nerves, she forced lightness into her voice. “I just came by to return the money and thank you again. The gift baskets for the shop will be delivered next week—”
“Why not just mail me the check or give it to Mercer?” Mark asked. “You could’ve saved yourself the trip and avoided me altogether.”
Samantha felt a pang. “I-I don’t want to avoid you, Mark.”
He moved closer, his features strained. “Who were you meeting at the Sea King last week?”
A coldness fell over her skin. “You followed me?”
“What did you expect? You came into my office looking like you were about to shatter into a million pieces. Then you give me some lame excuse for needing eight thousand dollars, right away, and you walk back out. I was worried.”
She closed her eyes, embarrassed he’d followed her there. “You had no right.”
“Who were you going there to see?” he pressed. “Did it have to do with why you really needed the money?”
She bowed her head.
“You’re angry with me. I understand, and I don’t blame you.” Holding her purse against her chest, throat tight, she turned for the door. She could only imagine what ideas were running through his head about her. “I’m sorry for the intrusion, Mark. Good night.”
“Sam,” he whispered into the air, still sounding irritated. He spoke louder as she walked out. “Samantha.”
She had nearly reached the Camry when Mark caught up to her. He took hold of her arm and whirled her around to face him, causing her to gasp.
“I’m not letting you walk out on me again without giving me answers.”
“Please. Just let me go. It doesn’t concern you—”
“Like hell it doesn’t,” he ground out, his jaw hard. His hoarse words washed over her. “I care about you, Samantha. I might even be falling in love with you, if you’d give me half a chance.”
Her heart squeezed at his admission. Staring at him in the graying twilight, the roar of the ocean behind them, Samantha saw sincerity, as well as the pain she’d inflicted, in his eyes. She felt something break loose inside her. She was so tired of running. Of keeping herself closed off from everyone.
“I went to see someone I used to know,” she confessed in a frayed voice. “But he’s gone now. It’s over. He won’t be back.”
“That’s the truth?”
“Yes. Please...don’t ask me anything else.”

NO! Not another cliffhanger!! I can’t wait!! Really?? My most crucial question left for the next book!

I had a hard time at first getting into it and following what was going on and whose POV I was in. But, then I got it and I found myself starving to get to the next words and find out what would happen and figure out my many questions my mind was asking.

My light bulb should have gone off early in the book. But I did not see it coming. I didn’t see a lot of things coming. There were many twists and turns and more hands in the plot than I could have imagined. And I need to get my hands on the next book soon.

The trolls have a lot of magic. They are selfish creatures and after a lot of fun. They live underground. They use precious stones and metals to entice children so they can take them away forever. The knights are the troll’s enemy and are recruited by the age of twelve. They must kill a troll by then or they forfeit being a knight.

Abby’s friend Leo disappeared at the same time her cousin did. Leo always said he was a knight. She thought him ridiculous and playing a game. Leo has been gone for 5 years now and she always felt it her fault he was gone. She doesn’t know what happened to him and she thinks about him and her cousin often.

Abby’s father died and her mom is getting remarried to a man with a young boy, Michael, who is constantly saying a troll is following them. He tells Abby about them but she thinks he is silly. He finds a book at the library and it has notes in it from Leo. It makes Abby wonder.

Abby has been bullied and labeled a freak ever since she can remember. Now this new boy has come to her school and shows interest in her. She has never been kissed. Abby is a good person who isn’t self absorbed at all. She has a pure heart. Will, the new boy, is Wilhelm the troll. He wants something she has. But he also finds himself attracted to her and protecting her too. He doesn’t understand why.

There is a great battle coming and just as it starts; the book ends!

I did see similarities in her characters as Donna and Ryan, from the Sparks series by the same author, in that Abby is not the popular one but finds her inner strength to become a hero!

The story idea is amazing. The twists very clever! The characters believable and some hated, unsure of or pitied.

There are still so many questions that it demands you wait to get your hands on the next book because you want to know what will happen next. Because the ending of the book has to be a trick because I won’t accept it like that!!

I am team Wilhelm!

Seconds went by and he found nothing, except a distraction. It wasn’t the human’s heartbeat drumming steadily on the second floor that he found unnerving, most likely it was the fact that she was reading a rhyme aloud – that wasn’t a human thing as much as it was a trolls’: “A kiss was made,” he heard her voice whisper, trying to ignore it. “A rose was dropped.” He looked up when she said the word rose. “A heart was snapped in half. The love of your life has left you in a world that’s dark and black.”
He moved toward the sound. Perhaps she was really one of his kind in disguise, here to spy on him.
“Thunder sounds, the sky turns gray, there is nothing recognizable at all. The love of your life has left you in a world that’s sad and small.” The words made him think about Helena, his Helena, kissing Klaus, while he had her fully under his control. It was sickened him and pissed him off.
He crept down the bookcase where a girl was reading from a book out loud, unaware of his presence. She was definitely not a troll, he concluded when he got a good look at her, growing bored. “But then the sun comes out. A rainbow appears. An angel has come to tell you, your hope is stronger than fear.”
“Are you sure that’s what an angel would say?” he asked.
Her blue, puppy-like eyes shot up, her body nearly jumping out of its skin from being startled. “Where did you come from?” she squeaked as she looked around, her heartbeat doubling.
“About five shelves over,” he answered as he looked her up and down. She was a tiny, petite thing compared to himself, with light brown hair and blushed fair skin that made her blue eyes pop. She also had four freckles on one cheek and three on the other. This human was both plain looking but also strangely captivating compared to others in the building.
“Oh, I see, and were you standing there the entire time?” she asked, her free hand going to her hip, as she tried to stand up straighter, trying to seem tall and authoritative. He could see she was irritated at being disturbed, and that was the most entertaining thing of all.
“Yes, is that a problem?” he asked with a smile.
“I’m sorry … I thought you worked here. I was just looking for some help,” he lied. Did she think he wouldn’t notice the fact that she was standing next to a filing cart and wearing a library badge that read: Abigail? That, and the feelings of servitude and obligation that he could smell all over her.
“Oh, I – I do,” she said, as if this had just occurred to her. She was unable to wipe the annoyance and unease off her face, as she looked down his arm, judging him because of his numerous tattoos. Humans...so sadly sheltered. “How can I help you?”
He didn’t answer. This irritated her more.
“The college used book section is downstairs, and so is the art and tattoo section,” she suggested, trying to guess his reason for pestering her.
“Do I really look old enough to be in college to you?” he asked, half insulted because college years for humans were death years for his kind.
“Yes,” she said honestly as she took in his tall, six-foot-five frame. “You look at least twenty.”
“Nope, time to get your eye’s checked maybe?” he asked, stepping closer, letting her guess his age; this seemed like a game she didn’t want to play.
“Well you’re definitely a least eighteen,” she replied as she turned part of her body away from him, her eyes back to her books; as if being eighteen put him in a different category than her. “You’d have to be to get a tattoo, now is—”
“Or maybe I had really cool parents,” he cut her off. “And I’m seventeen. That was an enchanting poem you read by the way. Who was it by?”
He took another step closer as she took a step back, nearly colliding into a bookshelf. “Amber Paris.” She handed him the book she’d read from and appeared much more comfortable when he was looking at it and not her. He examined it with only partial interest. “She got it published when she was fifteen.” she seemed to know all about the subject.
“Well, that explains why it’s so good, then. People always come up with their best work when they’re young. I bet at twelve her poems were even better.”
Each word he spoke was like a hook, spinning magic to pull her in to him even as she wanted to get away. “Where are you from, exactly?” she asked as she noticed what he was wearing; heavy jeans instead of the more typically Floridian surfer shorts, and a thick dark green shirt that went down to his elbows, only showing off half of his tattoos. Probably weird attire for the hottest months of Florida, but as a troll he craved warmth and hated the cold. “Are you from up north?”
“No, not at all,” he said, offering no other explanation. “So, why read a poem aloud? What about you does it relates to?” he asked with a grin, it was a pretty personal question and yet she’d have to tell him. Soon his powers if he kept talking to her would be able to push Abby to do all sorts of things... for a short time anyway, until a price was paid.
He read over the beginning lines of the poem again. “A kiss was made, a rose was dropped.” The words tripped him up, making him think about Rosabel’s last feelings before she died. Feelings that held a deep meaning for him, letting him know that even though she had never been able to claim him as an inheritor, she still had cared about him more than any other treasure.
His eyes could have almost teared up just thinking about his murdered mother. Trolls could be insanely emotional – good thing for him he was better at shielding how he felt than most. He turned his face away, getting a hold of himself, as the little human rambled, her voice a comforting distraction.
“I don’t think it relates to me. I just write poetry so my teacher asked me to look over another writer’s work.”
“Because maybe you want to be like this writer, famous and well liked?” he stated to test if her interest in the author was shallow, sensing what she didn’t even know was one of her most hidden desires. Humans could be so naive about their own ambitions, but these were easily recognized by trolls. This one clearly had no idea what her body and mind were capable of yearning for.
“No,” she lied, as if insulted. “That’s crazy. I’ve never wanted that; it’s just an assignment.”
“Are you sure?” he asked, as her hidden wants started calling to him – they tasted satisfying too. Her craving for freedom, he could use that to trap her, and then trap all the humans here. He’d have some real fun after a day of anger and sorrow as he played with these fools until they broke.
Leave her alone! a small boy’s voice suddenly screamed into his ear. He turned around, startled, only to find no one behind him.
“Are you okay?” he heard Abby ask him. His face must have looked haunted. That’s when he sensed where the book that he had been searching for was.
“Yes.” Finding the book and his key were far more important than this girl or having a little fun. He looked back in Abby’s direction, now needing to get rid of her. She looked nervous and still confused by his presence, still not knowing why she was continuing to talk to him. He decided in that moment to show her the kind of mercy and kindness his mother Rosabel should have received. Besides, he really didn’t feel like killing anyone innocent so the knights couldn’t find them later.
Before she could move, he reached out and gripped her shoulder, sending heat through her body, making her look deep into his eyes. “If you ever see me or anything like me again, anyone that has markings like this…,” he lifted his sleeve so she could take in his entire arm. His tattoos on it came to life and moved hypnotically, numbing her senses and making her go into a trance. “… you probably shouldn’t trust us. You should be smart and stay away from anyone like myself that you ever come in contact with.”
And with those words, he had given her a precious gift he hadn’t given any other human in a very long time. If any more trolls came along she’d stay out of their way now, wanting nothing to do with them. He watched her walk off in a beautiful daze. She’d certainly stay away from him if he changed his mind in the next few moments and decided to pursue her after all. Trolls often did change their minds about most things. He imagined her lips would have tasted pretty good, for a human anyway. Her body would have most likely felt nice …
Please leave her alone! he heard the boy scream again, the voice coming from his head. He was hearing a past memory, one that was too dangerous for him to think about. He ran his fingers along the book spines one more time. They led him right to the familiar texture he had been looking for. To the very storybook a young knight had checked out and carried in his backpack years before Wilhelm had found him.

Book Blitz & Giveaway: His Work Of Art (Hot & Nerdy #4) by Shannyn Schroeder

His Work Of Art (Hot & Nerdy #4)
by Shannyn Schroeder.
Audience/Genre: New Adult, Romance.
Publication: October 27th 2015.
Reese Carter is definitely not your average college girl. She’d prefer to spend Saturday nights playing Hero’s Crusade than attending a wild frat party on campus. When she bands together with Adam, fellow comic enthusiast and illustrator, it appears that Reese has formed a dream team sure to propel her writing into the comic hall of fame.

Adam Hayes has never met a girl like Reese. She’s sassy, smart, and loves talking comics, although he can’t see why she’d choose DC over Marvel. He’s thrilled to finally put his artistic chops to use in their upcoming comic project. But this relationship is strictly professional. Or so he tells himself. When the two combine forces, they churn out magic in more ways than they had planned; they never expected to develop a steamy romantic sub-plot of their own…

She reached for a slice as Adam walked in the back. He returned with some napkins, which was good because she now had sauce dripping on her chin. “Thanks,” she mumbled around a mouthful of hot cheese. Just as she wiped at her chin, a blob of sauce landed on her cargo pants. She rubbed at it, resigned to another stain.
The corners of his mouth lifted, but he said nothing. He leaned against the counter in front of the register. They ate in silence through their first pieces. They’d worked a long time to figure out how to approach this partnership.
No matter what, collaboration was rough.
Adam wiped his hands on a napkin. “Do you think this is going to work?”
“What? Us?” Probably not the best wording.
He nodded.
“As long as you give up your boob fixation, yeah.” She blew out a heavy breath that puffed her bangs away from her forehead. “It’s harder than I thought. It’d be cool if we could just do a Vulcan mind meld, and you could see inside my head and know what I’m picturing. If I had any artistic skill, I’d attempt to draw it myself. But I find stick figures challenging.”
“So Lyrid can’t have big tits. I get it. You can stop telling me. But I’m not going to draw her like a guy either.”
The jab hit home. More times than she cared to think about, people had commented on her appearance. “I don’t want her to be a guy. But real women don’t have a two-inch waist to go with their ginormous boobs.”
“Lyrid isn’t real. She’s a character. A fantasy.”
But why did the fantasy always have to be sex goddess? “Can we settle on a happy medium?” She squinted at him and searched for the right words. “Curvy, but not voluptuous?” She pointed at him. “And no spillage.”
She cupped her hands in front of her own small chest. “Spillage. Popping out of a ridiculous outfit.”
Adam dropped his pizza back in the box and went to the drawing table. He flipped up his sketch pad. An intense expression took over his face and Reese stared. She couldn’t look away. His long fingers moved quickly with a pencil in his left hand. She knew that when he was finished, smudges would be smeared on the edge of his palm as well as on his fingertips.
It was like she was no longer in the room.

Shannyn is a former English teacher, who now works as a part-time editor while raising her three kids.

Even though she wrote from high school through college (mostly poetry), she'd never considered a career as an author. Writing fell by the wayside as she focused her energy on creating lesson plans and new and fabulous ways to torment her teen students. One group in particular dubbed her "The Torture Master," a title she carried into motherhood.

After the birth of baby number two, Shannyn resigned from teaching and fell in love with reading romance novels. She read so many books so quickly that her husband teased, "If you're going to read so many damn books, why don't you just write one?"

So she did. And she hasn't looked back since.

She is recovering from her Diet Coke addiction, fears putting her foot in her mouth on social media, and has a renewed appreciation for the bad girls of the world.

Shannyn is represented by Frances Black and Jennifer Mishler of Literary Counsel. Her debut, More Than This, will be released by eKensington on January 3, 2013.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: Into Darkness by Hayley Barrett

Follow the Whole Tour HERE

Into Darkness
by Hayley Barrett.
Audience/Genre: Young Adult, Dystopian.
Publication: August 17th 2015 by Double Dragon Publishing.
Fifteen-year-old Alexandra Spencer’s life was not supposed to turn out this way. She was not supposed to go on trial for a crime she did not commit. She was not supposed to be found guilty. And she was not supposed to be sent to Elder Grey Detention Centre, a place of horrors many don’t survive.

She is however, supposed to be the daughter of the wealthiest, most influential man in the post-apocalyptic New Zealand city of New Phoenix.

But apparently, she isn’t.

Shell-shocked and struggling to understand why she is no longer a member of the city’s ruling family, Alexandra is torn from her privileged life by the churlish young guard, Will Metcalfe, and forced to trek for three weeks through deadly wilderness to her place of imprisonment. Her journey with Will is a constant battle for survival, where she is never sure who is the real enemy. It is also journey into the truth about the safe and lavish world from which she has been cast. Through Will, she learns of a mutant race called Drifters living in the wilderness who are being preyed upon by New Phoenix’s guards—Drifter’s blood being a life saving cure-all elixir for the city’s inhabitants.

As Alex struggles to cope with her new life in Elder Grey, an act of friendship ends in tragedy. When someone she thought was an enemy pulls her from her despair, Alex discovers that old friends cannot be trusted, prejudice is another word for fear, and trust, not blood ties, make a family.

When Will spoke, his voice was low, menacing, and far more terrifying than the blade he held to my neck. "I don’t appreciate being woken in the middle of the night to chase a Princess from the City around the bush, because she wants to stretch her legs." He looked at me with disgust. "I should take you straight to Eton. It’s what you deserve."

I shrugged my shoulders. Frankly, I’d rather he took me to Eton. I felt safer with him—he seemed the kinder of the two.

Will narrowed his eyes. "You have no idea. Eton’s not the saint you think he is. You’re just lucky it wasn’t him that found you."

"Lucky?" My voice returned at Will’s insinuation. "I’m lucky to have a knife pointing at my throat?" I sounded far braver than I felt, and the annoyed look in Will’s eyes as I spoke sent a shimmer of satisfaction through me. There was no need for him to know how petrified I was right now.

"Be glad that’s all it’s doing."

Something in his words didn’t ring true. "You won’t kill me, neither will Eton."

Will raised an eyebrow as if considering, and a threatening smile grew on his lips. True. "But we don’t have to kill you to make our point." The tip of his knife nicked my skin sending a trickle of blood dribbling down my neck.

Not totally happy with her efforts, in 2012 she commenced a novel writing course. Into Darkness, her first novel, is the result of the course and two years hard work.

Hayley lives in Rolleston, ten minutes south of Christchurch, New Zealand, with her husband and three children. When she isn’t driving her kids to their sports practices, games and other after school activities, she enjoys playing squash, relaxing in the sun and reading.
