Welcome to SmartMart, where crime pays minimum wage...

Busted. Alexis Dubois just got caught shoplifting a cheap tube of lipstick at the local SmartMart. She doesn’t know what’s worse—disappointing her overbearing beauty-pageant-obsessed mother for the zillionth time…or her punishment. Because Lex is forced to spend her summer working at the store, where the only things stranger than the staff are the customers.

Now Lex is stuck in the bizarro world of big-box retail. Coupon cutters, jerk customers, and learning exactly what a “Code B” really is (ew). And for added awkwardness, her new supervisor is the totally cute—and adorably geeky—Noah Grayson. Trying to balance her out-of-control mother, her pitching position on the softball team, and her secret crush on the school geek makes for one crazy summer. But ultimately, could the worst job in the world be the best thing that ever happened to her?

Reviewed by Kelly.

Lex had a little error in judgment when she stole some lipstick from SmartMart. She doesn’t even wear the stuff! She just wanted to see if her and Court could get away with it. Now, she has to pay the consequences. She has to work the summer in the store. Not only does she not want to be in this store but she plays ball and she volunteers too. How can she even add it to her agenda without losing her spot on the team as pitcher and losing volunteer hours for college?

Then she sees this hot guy in the store. She doesn’t recognize him at first and tells her very popular girl friends about him. Then when the light goes off and she remembers him, she doesn’t know what to do. He, Noah Grayson, is the guy who ratted on her best guy friend Bryce for spray painting on public property two years ago and got him suspended from the team at school. Lex likes Noah but she doesn’t want to tell her friends who he is or even be seen with him since she knows that would be a disaster. As they spend time together in the store, they start to really like each other. He doesn’t seem like the type of guy who would tattletale, in fact, he seems like the kind of guy to help others out at any cost. He likes his job, he helps others too. But he has been bullied for it over the past two years.

Alexis has an adorable grandmother, whom she loves dearly and who is suffering from Alzheimer’s and it is killing Lex. Lex has a younger sister who is a prima donna in the Pageant world. Her mother spends a lot of time with her sister primping her and buying her stuff for Pageants. That is definitely not Lex’s thing. Her mother is the heavy hand and what she says goes. Her dad is a good dad too.

Noah has a much younger sister who also is into Pageants. Noah’s mom is French Canadian. His dad, well I will let you judge him yourself.

Then when she finds out that Noah has a Pageant sister just like she does and shows up at a show, well things start to get really friendly but whenever a moment comes to kiss or talk about something important, something always seems to shatter the moment.

Of course, someday Bryce will figure it out and all hell breaks loose. What is Lex to do? Will she lose both of them?
I really enjoyed how this was a great learning time for Lex in really learning to serve and be kind to others and not to judge people. Not that the popular people don’t always judge but it happens. Lex learns a lot about her family and what really matters in life. She will do what it takes to do the right thing by the end.

I loved Noah! He is my hero! He is the best of the best! He is who he is but he has a few secrets and he doesn’t want to share them with the world. He is a protector and a hard worker! He has ethics and morals and dang where are the guys like him anymore?

So, if you like choosing the right thing, serving others, helping others in a tornado situation, lots of laughter and a few tears, stories with real life situations, believable characters and all the family dynamics of real life, Code B’s (Barf in the store), and a little romance tossed in then this might be for you!

  1. BENNET: Yeah. It's not different. But I don't think that the White House allowed the details of our plan Coach Purses On Clearance to sink in before they objected to it.
