Son of War, Daughter of Chaos
by Janette Rallison.
Audience/Genre: Fantasy.
Publication: July 2nd 2014.
Aislynn is accustomed to watching for the enemy. Her parents instructed her from the time she was young to look for the signs: people with greater than normal strength, eyes that can glow green, and have the ability to jump long distances. Over the years, Aislynn has come to view her parents’ fears as quirks—things that get in the way of having a normal high school life.

When Aislynn’s mother dies under suspicious conditions, her father doubles his restrictions. But all his precautions can’t stop the boy with glowing green eyes from finding Aislynn. She realizes too late she’s been drafted into an ancient Egyptian war, whether she’s prepared or not

An Excerpt...

I was on my feet and running down the path before I could fully process what was happening. The dark swarm flew toward me. Their wings sounded like the dull hum of an incoming storm. I didn’t have to see them to know they were scarabs—the flesh-eating kind. The Horusians had pinpointed our location and flown in beetles to kill us. How they found us, I didn’t know.
As I fled down the slope, I slipped. My feet jerked out in front of me. I hit the ground, hard, skidding and then flipped over. I tumbled down the slope, clawing at the ice, trying to get a handhold. White flashes of snow jumbled together in my vision. Finally, I hit a flat spot. I managed to stop, pick myself up, and run again. Panic wrapped around me. I couldn’t make it off the ridge before the scarabs reached me, and even if I could, I had nowhere to hide from the beetles on this open stretch of land. Still, I ran. I wouldn’t stand still for death.

Janette Rallison is old. Don’t ask how old, because it isn’t polite. Let’s just say she’s older than she’d like to be and leave it at that.

Janette lives in Chandler, Arizona with her husband, five children and enough cats to classify her as “an eccentric cat lady.” She did not do this on purpose. (The cats, that is; she had the children on purpose.) Every single one of the felines showed up on its own and refuses to leave. Not even the family’s fearless little Westie dog can drive them off.

Since Janette has five children and deadlines to write books, she doesn’t have much time left over for hobbies. But since this is the internet and you can’t actually check up to see if anything on this site is true, let’s just say she enjoys dancing, scuba diving, horse back riding and long talks with Orlando Bloom. (Well, I never said he answers back.)

Sometimes, things that go bump in the night are real.

My name is Whitney Lane. I’m sixteen years old and at first, I thought I was crazy.

I kept seeing shadows move along walls, and hearing whispers around corners, but whenever I looked, there was never anything there.

Until one day, there was.

Our world isn’t what we think. There are things around us, good things, bad things, scary things.
Things that we tell ourselves aren’t real, but they are.

They’re very real, and they’re terrifying.

I’ve been swept up now, in a battle of good and evil, confused about love and what is supposed to be love, but isn’t. I don’t know what to think anymore. I can’t trust my emotions and I don’t know what is true.

There’s only one thing I know for sure.

Nothing is what it seems.

**This can be read as a STANDALONE. The second book in the Lost series tells Jessica and Parker's story.**

All Jessica wants -as a college graduate — is to be a good girl. She landed the job of her dreams at a museum and is trying to eliminate temptations. No more short skirts (when she can help it). No wild parties. And no men.

She particularly excels at that last thing. . .

Until her path crosses Parker’s. Again. Jessica remembers the last time their paths crossed very well. She was left with a seriously bruised ego. She knows it would be best to avoid him altogether. But the charming Brit makes it hard for her to elude his electrifying pull. He is as irresistible as he is captivating.

And enigmatic.

Because underneath the sleek Armani suit and the sweet British accent that makes her crave his touch, Parker isn’t the perfect gentleman everyone thinks he is.

He’s exactly what Jessica doesn’t want, but desperately needs.
A bad, bad boy

Guest Post: Random/Funny Facts...

So, remember the awkward story I shared with you when Lost in Us was released? The one where I wrote a letter on the back of a paper with a really hot scene in it?
It gets better.
I love writing in airports. I don’t know why, I just do. If I would ever be blessed to be able to write full time, I’d totally be an airport crasher :-D Well, anyway, I was travelling this one time, and of course I got my laptop out to write a scene. A HOT scene. I didn’t quite manage to finish it while waiting for boarding, so once the plane was in the air, I got out my laptop and began to type away. At some point I shifted slightly in my seat. That’s when I realize the guy seated next to me was staring at my laptop screen and his face was very, very red. I politely smiled and immediately closed my laptop, my own face on fire.
So yeah, I seem to have achieved a new high in embarrassing myself. Not that it will stop me from writing in airports :-D

Before You (Before & After #1)
by Amber Hart.
Audience/Genre: Young Adult.

Some say love is deadly. Some say love is beautiful. I say it is both.

Faith Watters spent her junior year traveling the world, studying in exquisite places, before returning to Oviedo High School. From the outside her life is picture-perfect. Captain of the dance team. Popular. Happy. Too bad it’s all a lie.

It will haunt me. It will claim me. It will shatter me. And I don't care.

Eighteen-year-old Diego Alvarez hates his new life in the States, but staying in Cuba is not an option. Covered in tattoos and scars, Diego doesn't stand a chance of fitting in. Nor does he want to. His only concern is staying hidden from his past—a past, which if it were to surface, would cost him everything. Including his life.

At Oviedo High School, it seems that Faith Watters and Diego Alvarez do not belong together. But fate is as tricky as it is lovely. Freedom with no restraint is what they long for. What they get is something different entirely.

Love—it will ruin you and save you, both.

An Excerpt...

“Hi, I’m Faith Watters.”
Those are the first words I speak to the new Cuban guy in the front office. He grimaces. He’ll be a tough one. I can handle it, though. He’s not the first.
I can’t help but notice that he looks a lot like a model from the neck up—eyes the color of oak, strong bone structure. Everywhere else, he looks a lot like a criminal. Chiseled, scarred body … I wonder for a second about the meaning behind the tattoos scratched into his arms.
One thing’s clear. He’s dangerous.
And he’s beautiful.
“I’ll show you to your classes,” I announce.
I’m one of the peer helpers at our school. It’s not my favorite thing to do, but it counts as a class. Basically I spend the first two days with new students, introducing them around and answering their questions. Some parents with kids new to the school voluntarily sign their students up, but it’s only mandatory for the international students, of which we have a lot. Mostly Latinos.
This Cuban guy towers over me. I’m five six. Not tall. Not short. Just average. Average is good.
This guy’s not average. Not even a little bit. He must be over six feet.
I glance up at him, kind of like I do when I’m searching for the moon in a sea of darkness.
“Looks like you have math first. I’ll walk you there,” I offer.
“No thanks, chica. I can handle it.”
“It’s no problem,” I say, leading the way.
He tries to snatch his schedule from my hands, but I move too fast.
“Why don’t we start with your name?” I suggest.
I already know his name. Plus some. Diego Alvarez. Eighteen years old. Moved from Cuba two weeks ago. Only child. No previous school records. I read it in his bio. I want to hear him say it.
“You got some kinda control issues or somethin’?” he asks harshly, voice slightly accented.
“You got some kind of social issues or somethin’?” I fire back, holding my stance. I won’t let him intimidate me, though I’ll admit, he’s hot. Too bad he has a nasty attitude.
The side of his lip twitches. “No. I just don’t mix with your type,” he answers.
“My type?”
“That’s what I said.”
“You don’t even know my type.” No one does. Well, except Melissa.
He chuckles humorlessly. “Sure I do. Head cheerleader? Date the football player? Daddy’s little girl who gets everything she wants?” He leans closer to whisper. “Probably a virgin.”
My cheeks burn hot. “I’m not a cheerleader,” I say through clamped teeth.
“Whatever,” he says. “Are you gonna give me my schedule or not?”
“Not,” I answer. “But you can feel free to follow me to your first class.”
He steps in front of me, intimately close. “Listen, chica, nobody tells me what to do.”
I shrug. “Fine, suit yourself. It’s your life. But if you want to attend this school, it’s mandatory for me to show you to your classes for two days.”
His eyes narrow. “Who says I want to attend this school?”
I take the last step toward him, closing the gap between us. When we were little, Melissa and I used to collect glass bottles. Whenever we accumulated twenty, we’d break them on the concrete. When the glass shattered, the slivered pieces made a breathtaking prism of light.
I cut myself on the glass by accident once. It was painful, but worth it. The beauty was worth it. It’s funny how the bottle was never as beautiful as when it was broken.

There is so much to say about this book. There are secrets, there are expectations, there are fake smiles, there is a sort of trying to please people, there are trying to overcome almost insurmountable odds to live a normal life, and then there is trying to find someone to love who you really are.

My first thought was the movie “West Side Story”. I had forgotten about that movie until I read the book.

Faith is a preacher’s daughter. Her mother ran out on them, abandaned them. Her mother got into drugs. Her father is now remarried and has a little girl named Grace who Faith adores. Faith has a secret too. For a year she was gone. Everyone at school, including her football boyfriend, believed she was off on a mission. But Faith was hurt by her mother leaving and wanted to know what is was like to be in her shoes. Faith has another side of her outside her home that only her friend Melissa sees. That Faith is fun and feisty. But the Faith at home and in public dresses to please her dad by wearing modest clothing that is maybe more frumpy than modest, She doesn’t want to hurt her dad’s position at church. So she just lives and does what she must, but she is not really living at all.

Then in comes Diego. He has lived in survival mode. Doing what he could to help his family survive in Cuba, which meant being part of a Drug Cartel. He chose to be a body guard not wanting to sell the stuff. But even that life had its consequences and Diego and his father ran to the US to try and find a better life. But it is hard to run from evil and it evil will find you again. Diego has scars and tattoos as a reminder of that life. He loves his family and is close with his cousin. He tries to just be a normal senior. But the M13 gang wants to recruit him and he doesn’t want anything to do with it and fights them to leave him alone.

When Faith and Diego meet there is an attraction. Even though Faith has a boyfriend and Diego wants to ignore her neither can fight it for long. Faith is just living the life everyone expects of her. I get that. Some people live their lives to please others and aren’t really living. I was that way in high school. I tried to do things that would please my parents. It really wasn’t what I wanted. Diego’s family is shocked to see when the two get together, not in a bad way. Just unexpected. Here is where I have seen other reviews condemn the book because of what Diego and others say in the book is prejudice. If you live in a community that thinks one way that is what you know. You have to be the one to change it. It made me think afterwards. Life is too short to worry about what others think, I learned that too. I am Caucasian and my daughter married a Peruvian. I don’t see anything but two happy people married to each other. So, I was taken back when the book made a point of races between the two. I NEVER ONCE thought of my son in law as different from me. He just had a nice tan! I want a nice tan! LOL. What I see is that Faith and Diego move on and do what is in their hearts and become a couple.

Then the prejudice and hate from others come in and makes it difficult. They both get hurt often and tragedy strikes. But, Faith keeps going and helps others. What a sacrifice she makes for the benefit of others and not herself. She learns to live. Isn’t that what life is really about, to be happy and help others?!?

Isn’t the cover just the cutest ever??

If you are looking for a cute, short, Christmas story this is it. If you like humor, you got that too! If you like insecurities, getting rid of bitterness, Les Mes, costumes, trying to do the right thing, red caribous that might make you think of Rudolph the red nosed reindeer, singing and making up words to songs, having a cause, meddling housekeepers and neighbors that crack you up, or if you need a little pick me up of holiday happiness, and of course finding a little romance then this is for you.

I was cracking up through this book. Frankie is on a mission to save the “reindeer” that was heading for the meat locker. So she heads off with a “borrowed” vehicle to take them to Three River Ranch where the “reindeer will be safe”. It’s just that Frankie gets stuck and the Sheriff comes in and saves the day.

Sheriff Red is a quiet, sad and maybe a little bitter after his divorce. He is caught between enforcing the law and seeing what really is going on. He finds himself intrigued with the quirky Frankie. He finds himself singing again too because Frankie brings out the best of him.

They are stuck in a snowstorm and find that they aren’t alone anymore. And maybe even find that this is more than just being together to wait out the storm and be on their own ways. So what are you waiting for? Go buy the book. This book makes you warm and fuzzy inside and smile and laugh!

“She tossed a handful of snow at his face, then shrieked as the wind whipped it back into her own.
Red hooted. "Karma's a boomerang, sweetheart. Don't forget it.”

Before she was a novelist, Roxanne was an aerobics instructor (fired for insufficient coordination), a cosmetics salesperson (lacked that go-for-the-throat sales attitude), a dog-trainer (they all died*), a tax consultant with H&R Block (yeah, that was before Quicken and TurboTax), taught dog and cat breed names (she's a font of useless information) and most recently, wrote content for an interactive romance/mystery video game (still can't master Windows 8.)

Now she explores all kinds of careers from the safety of her desk, through her characters. It's better for everyone that way.

*It was 15 years ago, people! It's not like they died because of her!

Making Faces by Amy Harmon

Making Faces

Audience/Genre: New Adult/YA, Contemporary Romance, Military.
Publication: October 12th 2013 by Smashwords.
Source: Purchased
Ambrose Young was beautiful. He was tall and muscular, with hair that touched his shoulders and eyes that burned right through you. The kind of beautiful that graced the covers of romance novels, and Fern Taylor would know. She'd been reading them since she was thirteen. But maybe because he was so beautiful he was never someone Fern thought she could have...until he wasn't beautiful anymore.
Making Faces is the story of a small town where five young men go off to war, and only one comes back. It is the story of loss. Collective loss, individual loss, loss of beauty, loss of life, loss of identity. It is the tale of one girl's love for a broken boy, and a wounded warrior's love for an unremarkable girl. This is a story of friendship that overcomes heartache, heroism that defies the common definitions, and a modern tale of Beauty and the Beast, where we discover that there is a little beauty and a little beast in all of us

Reviewed by Kelly.

I bought this book and I don’t remember where I saw it but someone wrote a review that made me want to read it. When I started it, I almost put it back down. It was in third person and I am not fond of that. But I am really glad I kept reading it. I was pretty much in tears the whole last quarter of the book.

This book is terribly real, and about as raw as it gets, and is a redeeming story! You need a few Kleenex to get through it. I don’t think there is one paragraph that doesn’t have a message or a meaning. This isn’t your typical hot man meets hot girl book, it goes way beyond looks! There is no sexy guy chasing a sexy girl, no hot scenes, none of that because it is as real as it gets. There is a good looking guy damaged in the war. There is a boy in a wheelchair from M.D.. There is a guy who beats his wife. There are divorced parents. There is a girl who has always had a lack of self esteem. This is real and I love it! To me, these people are the heroes in this world!

We have 3 people that we follow. The first is Fern. She is the glue. She is the sweetest person ever. She is tiny and growing up she had red unruly hair, thick glasses and was tiny and she thought she was ugly. She takes tender loving care to her cousin, Bailey, who has Muscular Dystrophy. The two are inseparable. She is Bailey’s angel on earth. Fern has always had a crush on Ambrose.

Bailey is smart and makes the best of his world. He is the son to Coach Sheen of the wrestling team at the high school. Bailey always wanted to wrestle. Even before he was wheelchair bound, he tried to take on Ambrose, who wrestles. Bailey called Ambrose Hercules. Bailey has always had a crush on Rita. He is my hero.

Then there is Ambrose. He is a little on the quieter side. He is a state champion in wrestling. He silently leads him and his 4 friends. He is tall and built and has to work at cutting his weight to wrestle. He is solid muscle is very handsome and every girl swoons over him. Rita, Fern’s friend, talked her into writing love notes to Ambrose so that he would notice her. After they start going out, Ambrose figures out that she isn’t the one writing the letters and the two break up. When Ambrose and Fern talk about the letters and that she wrote them, he kind of gives her the silent treatment because he was hurt but secretly he cares for her. But Ambrose doesn’t really know who he is. They call him Hercules because of his long hair that he keeps in a pony tail and he wins wrestling. Ambrose decides instead of taking a full ride scholarship to wrestle he is going to join the Army and he talks his friends into going with him.

Then the unthinkable happens just before they their tour was up. Only Ambrose comes home and he is scarred and he is blind and deaf and very scarred on one side of his face. He refuses to see anyone when he does come home. But a chance encounter with Fern at midnight has him rethinking her. She doesn’t treat him differently because of his scarred face. She works night shift in the store where Ambrose is in the bakery at night where he doesn’t have to see anyone.

Eventually they talk more and Ambrose smiles and then eventually laughs. Bailey comes into the store at night too and they sometimes become silly and laugh. Bailey doesn’t let Ambrose have any self pity and he tells Ambrose how it really is to be in his shoes. The three become inseparable. Bailey wants Fern to be happy and he tells Ambrose to be good to her. Slowly, Ambrose falls for Fern. Fern has always loved him from afar and still does.

The chapter headings all have meaning and I thought I got it until the end. When I really saw what they meant, I was balling my eyes out all over again. All three of them are heroes and even though they have challenges they rise to being the best that they can and that is what makes this book so awesome. I can’t even tell you how good this book really was. I can’t do it justice. There is so much laughter and sorrow and conquering the world in this book. Service and sacrifice is here too! The families in this story are awesome and ugh! I can’t describe how good it was. There is something in every chapter that made me laugh and think. I can’t even write this review without tearing up! This is one of the best books ever!

“Because sometimes we fall in love with a face and not what’s behind it. My mother used to pour the grease off the meat when she cooked, and she stored it in a tin the cupboard. For a while, she used a tin that had once held those long, praline-covered cookies with hazelnut crème inside. The expensive ones? More than once I got that tin down thinking I’d found my mom’s secret stash, only to take off the lid and see smelly mounds of grease.” Elliott laughed, getting the point. “The container didn’t matter much at that point, huh?” “That’s right. It made me want cookies, but that container was major false advertising. I think sometimes a beautiful face is false advertising too, and too many of us don’t take the time to look beneath the lid. ….”

Cover Reveal: Burying Water by K.A. Tucker

Burying Water
by K.A. Tucker.
Audience/Genre: Contemporary Romance, New Adult.
Publication: October 14th 2014 by Atria.
The top-selling, beloved indie author of Ten Tiny Breaths returns with a new romance about a young woman who loses her memory—and the man who knows that the only way to protect her is to stay away.

Left for dead in the fields of rural Oregon, a young woman defies all odds and survives—but she awakens with no idea who she is, or what happened to her. Refusing to answer to “Jane Doe” for another day, the woman renames herself “Water” for the tiny, hidden marking on her body—the only clue to her past. Taken in by old Ginny Fitzgerald, a crotchety but kind lady living on a nearby horse farm, Water slowly begins building a new life. But as she attempts to piece together the fleeting slivers of her memory, more questions emerge: Who is the next-door neighbor, quietly toiling under the hood of his Barracuda? Why won’t Ginny let him step foot on her property? And why does Water feel she recognizes him?

Twenty-four-year-old Jesse Welles doesn’t know how long it will be before Water gets her memory back. For her sake, Jesse hopes the answer is never. He knows that she’ll stay so much safer—and happier—that way. And that’s why, as hard as it is, he needs to keep his distance. Because getting too close could flood her with realities better left buried.

The trouble is, water always seems to find its way to the surface

Promo Event & Giveaway: A Safe Space by E.M. Tippetts

A Safe Space
by E.M. Tippetts.
Audience/Genre: New Adult, Contemporary Romance.
Publication: July 12, 2014.
Everyone needs a safe space.

For Lizzie Warner, that space has always been in front of the camera on her hit show, or on stage to a sold out concert arena. Since before she can remember, she’s been a star, but that may be about to change.

She’s nineteen. Her show has been cancelled and now she’s going to play the lead in a new prime time drama series, but is the world ready to take her seriously, or will she be typecast as the cute tween queen forever?

Her network has decided to be aggressive and has invested millions of dollars in an ad campaign for her show, money she’s not sure she can earn back. Her co-star can’t stand her, and the writing for the show turns out to be poor at best. The only reason Lizzie didn’t walk away from the job offer to begin with is because she’s broke, the victim of a decade of bad money management.

Then there’s Devon, the personal trainer at her gym. Arrogant and abrasive, he’s the last guy she should ever find attractive, but she has a hopeless crush on him anyway, and he doesn’t seem entirely disinterested either. In fact, sometimes he’s downright sweet to her. If only he weren’t an untamable bad boy who uses and dumps women like they’re nothing. Though Lizzie’s friends warn her to stay away, he’s the only person who can create what she needs: a safe space. But is there any way she can break him of his years' long habit of being a user?

When their paths cross will they intersect or blindly pass each other by?

Will their lives take them in different directions?

(Let Me Love You is the fourth novel in the Love Series)

Reviewed by Kelly.

First and foremost, I hate Megan for leaving another cliffhanger! I thought when Epilogue showed up that it was a happily ever after, I So, should have known better!!!

I have loved this series since the very beginning. The characters are just raw with issues but, they are all linked as a well oiled family should be! Together they are strong, alone they fall apart. This book was no different. They care about each other and every aspect of their lives.

This is Jaylinn and Cooper’s story. Having both POV’s makes me see better in both their heads, this one more so because of what happened to Jaylinn and how Cooper handled it. Jaylinn is still a virgin but barely made it out by seconds, when a jerk drugged her and took her to his room. Cooper didn’t want to take Jaylinn to this party, he knew it was a bad place but she wanted to go. He gave her instructions to stay safe and then he finds her seconds before the jerk rapes her. This traumatizes both Jaylinn and Cooper. Both dealt with it differently and Jaylinn made Cooper promise not to tell anyone.

Jaylinn wants Cooper. Cooper wants Jaylinn. But Cooper doesn’t want to take her virginity from her. He is afraid. He can’t handle what it might do to them both. They fool around a lot but Cooper won’t give her what she wants. Jaylinn resorts to some trickery to tease and tempt him, which it does but he won’t follow through. Then Jaylinn has enough and walks out and Cooper lets her go. Stupid man! I wanted to slap him into next week! They both remain miserable without the other.

I felt sick waiting for them to figure things out. I both hate and like when an author can make me feel raw emotions that the characters go through!

We get to see some more of Mason and Hailey and find out what the sex of their twins are, and their names. Then Kenzie has her second baby and life seems perfect for all of them. I like the dynamics of family here, that it really is the center of things.

Excerpt
“Yo man, have you seen Jay?” I ask Eli who came to the party with us.
He shakes his head, “Last I saw she was sitting on the couch over there with Kevin.”
My stomach drops. Kevin’s the campus drug dealer. He used to be a tight end for the football team in our freshman year at college but was kicked off the team after drugs were found in his dorm. He’s from New Jersey too, but he lived up north and actually went to high school with Eli in Hoboken. Eli said he used to be really popular until he started hanging out with the wrong crowd.
I drop my arm from around Courtney, the girl I was planning on taking home, and go to try and find Jaylinn. Fuck, I knew I shouldn’t have brought her with me but I couldn’t tell her no. All that girl has to do is bat her eye lashes and I’d cave.
I search the whole downstairs of the frat house for her and Kevin but they are nowhere to be seen. Panic starts to set in, chilling me to the bone. I race up the stairs, three on the right, three on the left and one straight back. The first door opens and some guy is standing there that I don’t recognize, pulling a shirt over his head. I check the bed to make sure Jaylinn isn’t there. I do this to the next five doors; all were opened and occupied but Jaylinn wasn’t in any of them. I get to the last door on the left; it’s dark so I reach around the wall for a light switch. I flick it on and the room is empty.
“Where the fuck is she?” I roar.
I slam the door shut and stamp to the last door. My heart rate spikes causing a swooshing sound in my ears, my body shakes with rage. I turn the door knob, it’s locked. I bang on it, “Jaylinn,” Nothing, complete silence.
Something isn’t right. My stomach knots and I try banging on the door a few times, hoping someone is just passed out and can’t hear me. After a minute I can’t take it anymore and I ram my shoulder into the door. Once, twice, and finally it gives way.
My heart stops, I can’t breathe and my vision blurs.

An Excerpt...

White. Gazing out of the small, circular window, it was the only colour he could see surrounding him. The bursts of light—which had broken through the heavy, grey clouds—were reflected back as the ground grew closer with each passing second. Not too long ago he had been blissfully unaware of the location his sister was dragging him to for a holiday. A bubble of excitement had surrounded him throughout the early morning as he got up, and stayed with him through travelling to the airport and catching the flight. However, it had burst as soon as the icy tips of the mountains appeared and the plane began its descent. Until that moment, he had hoped his guesses had been wrong.
His sister had carefully planned the trip, making sure to hide all clues as to where they were heading, and as she glanced across at him, it seemed as if she had been successful. Luke’s knuckles were white on the arm rests. He had claimed both of them, gripping them so hard they looked like they would snap under the force, or at least be moulded to the shape of his hands when he removed them.
Ellie watched as he took in a shaky breath, but she heard no exhale.
“Luke?”
The silence that filled the space around them was icier than the Alps they had just flown over. Her brother’s gaze remained fixed on the window, watching as the ground, and his fate, drew ever closer. Deep, ragged breaths steamed up the window, which was almost touching his nose. Desperately, he tried to control the tremors shaking his body, and his pounding heart, from the fear that washed over him in waves.
“Luke, please, say something.” Worry had crept into Ellie’s tone. She had thought her idea would do him good, that forcing him to face everything would turn him back into his old self. Ellie missed the brother she had grown up with and wanted him back. However, seeing his eyes wide with fear, his jaw clenched in anger, and his arms tense with both, suddenly she wasn’t so sure about her plan.
“You promised, Ellie. You swore you wouldn’t pressure me, and I trusted you with that. You know how I feel about this.” His voice was sharp and curt as he spoke through clenched teeth, trying to keep a hold on his emotions.
The urge to flee surged within him. He wanted to go home, to get off the plane and board the next flight straight back to England, but he couldn’t. Not only was the plane still minutes from landing—trapping him in the confines of economy class, which felt even smaller as realisation forced him to understand Ellie’s plans—but he also refused to waste more money on the pointless trip Ellie had conned him into taking. If he was going to use the money he had earned from before everything changed, it would be on his own terms.
“You’ll enjoy it when you’re there,” Ellie stated, brushing off his comments like they meant nothing to her.
“That’s easy for you to say. You don’t have to live with, or through, what I have.” Luke was trying hard to control his voice. Had they been in private, he would have already been shouting. The cramped environment meant that Ellie was getting off lightly, but he swore that when they reached their chalet, he would not hold back. She had no right to interfere with his life.
“Never tell me I didn’t live through it, Luke. I was there when it happened, in the hospital, and when you got home. I was there through it all. It may not have been me, but it wasn’t like it had no effect on my life,” Ellie hissed. It was the only way she could convey her anger without disturbing other passengers.
“Why though, Ellie? Why is this such a big deal to you?” Luke’s eyes were full of sorrow as he turned to face his sister for the first time, begging to understand her reasoning for putting him through something she knew would hurt him.
