Essence (The EVE Series #1)
by A.L. Waddington.
Audience/Genre: Paranormal, Young Adult.
Publication: January 15th 2014 by Booktrope Publishing.
Jocelyn Timmons does not believe she is anything special — just an ordinary high school senior, living an ordinary life full of school-work, volleyball and friends. She’s about to find out how wrong she is.

Jackson Chandler moved in to the house across the street. His dark wavy hair, green eyes and charismatic personality draws everyone to him. Everyone, but Jocelyn.

Whenever Jackson gets near Jocelyn she feels ill and dizzy. When he touches her, she blacks out and has visions of another life, in another time. As the odd hallucinations evolve and become clearer, she feels a strong pull towards the people she sees there. Frightened, she watches her once stable life begin to crumble around her and she begins to question her own sanity.

Could it be possible that these episodes are actually her own memories of a life she is living somehow, somewhere, some-when? Maybe this is time-travel or some other paranormal mysticism? Our minds often wander, but can our souls?

This book really was intriguing. It is different, original, and kept me going, wanting to know more. By the end, I knew I was only going to get a teenie tiny answer to my questions. The story didn’t have a cliffhanger but left you definitely wanting to read the next book.

We have Jocelyn who has two lives, or so I think so anyway. One in the 19th century and one in the 21st century. We get two points of view of Jocelyn in different centuries. In the 19th century Jackson and Jocelyn are engaged and will be married in mere months.

In the 21st century, Jackson moves into the house across the street. The exact same homes in both time periods. Jackson instantly is attracted to Jocelyn and her to him. But in the 21st Century, Jocelyn finds herself sick whenever he is near and heaven forbid if they touch because she falls unconscious and sees herself in the 19th century. The images very real to her and she doesn’t tell anyone because she is afraid she may be losing her mind.
Then in the 19th century Jocelyn gets a gift from Jackson, a pocket watch with an engraving on it of his love for her. Whenever she touches it, she also faints and sees herself in the 21st century with strange clothing. Then she eventually sees Jackson in it.

As time goes on, the 21st century Jocelyn passes out one too many times and upon awakening she hears Jackson and his family talking about her and demands answers. She is scared and isn’t sure how to handle the answers given her.
So then it ends and you get the first chapter of the next book. But that wasn’t enough for me. I want desperately to know what happens next. So, I saw the next book is out and I just bought it. So, off I go to get some more answers and see what happens with Jocelyn and Jackson next.

5 star for great originality and keeping me on my toes and having me buy the next book to read right now.

  2. This sounds great! Thank-you for the opportunity to win a copy.

Besides the 21st century I'd choose a time period in the future.
