It takes a while to know who you really are. And when you lose your way, sometimes it’s hard to find it again.

Charlie Hudson was on the verge of figuring that out when her dad—the only parent and friend she ever had—died suddenly. She was barely 18, and she was alone. So she went for easy—playing life safe, running away from a home that harbored nothing but bad memories and challenges and loving a man who would take her away from it all forever.

It’s funny how chance takes over when you need it most. And that’s exactly what brought Cody Carmichael into her life. A former motocross super star, Cody was now happy to be living the blue collar life, spending his days finishing up school and his nights under the hood of some classic car, just trying to keep everything his father taught him alive. Cody and Charlie were living parallel lives, until they finally collided. And the moment he smiled at her, Charlie knew he was the one who would change everything. But was she willing to take the risk?

Cody saw through it all. He saw her—all of her. But would letting him in be too much to take? And if Charlie let herself love him—really love him—could he love her back?

I was reading a review on this book on Always YA at Heart by Ellen. I was hooked from her review alone. I entered her giveaway and won it.

Did you ever read a book that you felt your stomach literally drop, that it was you with the emotions of hurt? That’s what this book did to me. I felt the pain and at one point it felt so intense I didn’t want to read anymore, it hurt too much. I mean, I knew that there would be a HEA, but I didn’t want to go through anymore pain. If a writer can do that to me, I give it 5 stars.

There is also an unknowing love triangle here. I don’t like cheating and I understand that Charlie realized the different types of love she had for these two men in her lives.

Ok, let me back up. Charlie goes to school some ways away from her home where her father died. He was a cop and he died from a gunshot while off duty. Charlie’s mom dropped her off when she was a little girl and never looked back. Charlie’s dad never knew of her until the day she was dropped off. He wasn’t a great dad until one bad boyfriend hurt her, that woke him up and then he was everywhere with her and she was loved. But it wasn’t long after that that he was gone. So Charlie packed up and went to school.

At school, she meets Trevor. He’s safe and can give her the world. He is her Prince Charming. But is it enough? When circumstances change, Trevor has her come live at his family’s home. There she meets Trevor’s dad who is well off and he is ruthless and cruel and will do whatever it takes to get whatever he wants. Trevor’s stepmom is an alcoholic and is always a little tipsy. Then she meets Trevor’s stepbrother, Cody. She had first met him at school as a math tutor. She was instantly attracted to him and hurried to leave at that time because he was also attracted to her and she has Trevor. Then when she learns that Trevor is his brother, she doesn’t tell Trevor that she has already met him. Cody plays along and when Trevor leaves for business, she sees more of Cody and falls for him. She is scared and doesn’t really know what she wants anymore. She realizes the difference between her love for Cody and her love for Trevor. At the same time, she is getting the two brothers to be kind and be brothers to each other. Because Jim despises Cody.

Cody had me at the stars. That’s when I fell for him. Cody and Charlie were in his bedroom just chilling. She had shared with him some stories of her with her dad, including how they would hang out and watch the stars at night. Cody got up and did something that Charlie couldn’t see. He put some paper with some holes in it over the bedside table lamp. There on the ceiling were the stars. How thoughtful and sweet and kind is that??!! (picture from www.sdss.org)

When she decides to tell Trevor that she chooses Cody, she runs into Trevor’s dad. And he gives her an ultimatum that will be the destruction of all that is left of Cody’s deceased father’s auto shop that Cody lives for. Now Charlie is stuck but will do whatever she can to make Cody happy and so she breaks if off with Cody to remain with Trevor.

Then that’s where I started having a panic attack. Cody went ballistic. Everything started to fall apart and I couldn’t see how things could get better. I won’t tell you anymore. Maybe you can have your own feelings of betrayal and hurt!

P. S. What do you think of the cover, I like it!
