Courage (Mark of Nexus #2)
by Carrie Butler.
Audience/Genre: New Adult, Paranormal Romance.
Publication: October 15th 2013
Making a deal with the bad guys wasn’t the highlight of Rena Collins’ semester, but, hey, it saved her boyfriend. Now, in order to appease the human-altering organization known as ERA, she’ll crawl under their microscope while they study the Mark of Nexus and plot their eye-glazed version of the future—until she realizes that’s not all they’re plotting.
Wallace Blake has always known his girlfriend is unlike most girls. But now that information has surfaced regarding the two bloodlines that balance his supernatural race, he finally understands why. Rena belongs to one of them. She’s been augmenting his power, all along...
Enter: Corynn Catley. Brought into the country under the guise of an internship, she’s intended to become ERA’s secret weapon. Kind of. Her abilities cancel out Wallace’s, rendering him powerless, but that’s exactly what he’s always wanted. Too bad it only works when his girlfriend’s not around.
All the while, Rena fails to notice the crush her geeky best friend, Aiden Ross, is nursing. He’d give anything for her to see him in a new light—even reinvent himself through questionable means--but there’s a reason people are told to be careful what they wish for. Finding the courage to tell her could put everyone’s lives in danger.

Rena and Wallace are an awesome couple to be reckoned with. They complement each other. They make the other better. They are so darn cute together. And they are miserable apart.

This is the second installment in the Mark of Nexus series. They have come a long way from the first book. And still more keeps coming. More characters are introduced and there are changes that will alter everything in their little click of friends and family forever.

Rena learns that she isn’t human either. What? Yep, she has a little bit of a hard time wrapping around that concept. She loves Wallace so much that she even tried to sacrifice their relationship so that Wallace could have “normal”. I wish I could tell you more about that. But, that may not be what either wants. I thought my stomach was going to fall out when they parted ways, like it was my own loss, and as much as I knew they would have to get back together, it hurt. I hated reading about Corynn and I didn’t want her anywhere near Wallace. Thank goodness for the Mark of Nexus that would work in Rena and Wallace’s favor.

If you haven’t read the first book, pick it up and read it. These books aren’t filled with sex; in fact it takes a back seat. Which, I appreciate, it focuses on the relationship. Anyway, if you haven’t read the first book, the Mark of Nexus is a tattoo once thought to be legend, signifying of a Dynari and Augari’s bond. I got that directly from the book. But it just showed up on both Wallace and Rena in the first book. They can feel each other’s emotions and needs.

This book also gives us an insight into the evil that Wallace and Cole are related to and what they are doing. Wallace, Rena and Cole (Wallace’s brother) are doing their best to eliminate the evil that they are related to. But it isn’t easy to fight family members who have powers. They find out that Rena is an Augari. She as an Augari can augment Wallace’s, who is a Dynari, powers. Then there is Corynn who is a Nullari. She can nullify a Dynari’s abilities. They all play major roles in the evil plans to give everyone in the world power of some kind. Wallace, Rena, Cole and Corynn really just want to live their lives in peace but they are all forced one way or another to do what they don’t want to.

Anyway, I have told you enough. You need to read this book. It flows easily and keeps you engrained in the story until the end. Thank goodness there is no cliffhanger but just a desire to have the next book now. I could see this book as a movie easily.

Now to wait and see what happens next to all of the people who are so dear to Wallace and Rena and find out how they will rid the evil that is all around them.

Carrie daydreamed her way through college—until they thrust a marketing degree into her hands, slapped a summa cum laude seal on the corner, and booted her out into a less-than-stellar job market. Instead of panicking at the prospect of unemployment, she used her Midwestern logic to steer into the skid and point her life in the direction she really wanted to go: writing out those daydreams.
Her passion for New Adult fiction led her to co-found NA Alley—a widely recognized informational hub for the category. She is the author of STRENGTH (Mark of Nexus #1) and COURAGE (Mark of Nexus #2)
