The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay

The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay.
Audience/Genre : New Adult/Contemporary.
Publication : November 13th 2012 by Atria Books.
I live in a world without magic or miracles. A place where there are no clairvoyants or shapeshifters, no angels or superhuman boys to save you. A place where people die and music disintegrates and things suck. I am pressed so hard against the earth by the weight of reality that some days I wonder how I am still able to lift my feet to walk.

Former piano prodigy Nastya Kashnikov wants two things: to get through high school without anyone learning about her past and to make the boy who took everything from her—her identity, her spirit, her will to live—pay.

Josh Bennett’s story is no secret: every person he loves has been taken from his life until, at seventeen years old, there is no one left. Now all he wants is be left alone and people allow it because when your name is synonymous with death, everyone tends to give you your space.

Everyone except Nastya, the mysterious new girl at school who starts showing up and won’t go away until she’s insinuated herself into every aspect of his life. But the more he gets to know her, the more of an enigma she becomes. As their relationship intensifies and the unanswered questions begin to pile up, he starts to wonder if he will ever learn the secrets she’s been hiding—or if he even wants to.

The Sea of Tranquility is a rich, intense, and brilliantly imagined story about a lonely boy, an emotionally fragile girl, and the miracle of second chances.

I don't think 5 stars does this book justice. I was up until 5:30 in the morning reading this and I didn't even realise that I had been up all night!

I am so glad that I decided to purchase The Sea of Tranquility and even more that I actually read it! I don't know if my review can actually nail all the reasons I loved this book but I'll try. Sure, the story is messed up at so many levels with both the protagonists - Nastya and Josh - having a truck load of baggage/issues but I swear, this novel has one of the best narratives I've ever read in a YA/New Adult book in a long time!

The characters are dark, intense, witty, humorous and sarcastic in a way that I completely love. They're just awesome. When I started reading this book, I expected dark, depressing and predictable but instead I got addictive, amusing and emotional. The story begins with Nastya, a teenage girl with a traumatic past joining a new school. The first thing you find out about Nastya is that she doesn't talk. At all. So I have to say that it's pretty impressive how the author nailed 70% of the story just through the characters' thoughts and observations.

Then there's Josh, the broody loner (but not in an uncool way) that everyone steers clear of. The chemistry between Josh and Nastya is striking right from the start and I loved watching them get close. I'll admit, the last 20% of the book is too dramatic for my taste but even then the good definitely outweighed the bad by a long shot. Ah, there are so many little things that stick with you from this book such as Drew's amazingness, sunday dinners, sunshines, cakes and ice creams, the list is never ending!

The Sea of Tranquility pretty much screams "Turn me into a movie, I'll get you an Oscar!". This is one of the best books I've read this year!

  9. I loved The Sea of Tranquility. It was dark, emotional and beautiful. The characters were so real and I was so emotionally connected to them throughout the entire story, that I am having a difficult time moving on. This is a definite must read!
