Owlet (Society of Feathers #1) by Emma Michaels.
Audience/Genre : Young Adult/Paranormal.
Publication : October 13th 2012 by Tribute Books.
Somewhere between falling and flying… there is a girl.

Iris has a secret. She lost her memory eight years ago and never told a living soul. After an asthma attack one night she finds out that her dreams of a strange house on a snowy island may be a memory resurfacing but the more she learns about the past the more she realizes the life she has been living is a lie. As the façade her father has built starts to crumble around her she will have to decide which means more to her; the truth or her life.

Excerpt.

Diana ran out behind her but Iris turned back. “I SAID DON’T FOLLOW ME!” she screamed and started walking, knowing that if she was running Diana would have no choice but to follow and make sure she was okay. She heard Diana call out after her but she ignored her, walking through the trees the way she had in her dream to find the spot where she had fallen down earlier.

Her breathing was slowly getting worse but she didn’t use her inhaler, she just kept moving, trying to find a way for her mind to see everything more clearly.

Find him. He will help.

Iris turned away from her normal path and into the denser trees without a trail. She closed her eyes for a moment and tried to let herself calm down as she slowed her walk, took her inhaler and attempted to relax her lungs. Before she knew it she was headed to the side of the island she had never seen in her dreams. She kept walking, not paying attention to her surroundings until she heard a bird singing. The melody was so hauntingly beautiful that she stood still to listen.

When the song ended she started walking in the direction it had come from and entered a clearing with logs lying on their sides forming a circle. “Hello.”

Iris jumped and took a step back. The young man she had seen out the window of the ‘apple’ room was sitting on one of the logs with the songbird sitting at the opposite end of it. “It is a superb Lyrebird. Your mother had them imported from Australia. While they don’t like the rest of the United States they do seem to love this island.”

Remember.

An Island Experience.

- Emma Michaels.

Growing up I never saw snow falling or trees of a deep, unimaginable green. Growing up in California, I had normally only seen shops, smog and flatlands. The island featured in Owlet that Iris affectionately refers to as her Never-Never was inspired by an actual island I visit from time to time in Washington State where I now live. The island came alive after my first visit there and in the novel it inspires Iris as she fights for the truth, even when her own family tries to hold her back.

In a way, that is what the island represents for Iris – being able to overcome the pain and trials of her life by finding out that the dream she has always held as a secret in her heart and guarded from others, is actually a real place. For so long she had dreamed of an island of snow, her Never-Never, a place that was always out of her reach, no matter how hard she tried to get there. When she finally learns the truth about the island, dreams and the real world collide, bringing all she knows into question.

Like Iris, I had never known that such a beautiful place existed until moving to Washington State. I think I feel like she does in the story, learning of my own Never-Never and finally being able to reach out and touch it.
Here are some pictures of the island that inspired me from a few of the times I visited it!
