Point of Retreat (Slammed #2) by Colleen Hoover

Point of Retreat (Slammed #2) by Colleen Hoover.
Audience/Genre : Young Adult/Contemporary Romance.

Hardships and heartache brought them together…now it will tear them apart.

Layken and Will have proved their love can get them through anything; until someone from Will’s past re-emerges, leaving Layken questioning the very foundation on which their relationship was built. Will is forced to face the ultimate challenge…how to prove his love for a girl who refuses to stop ‘carving pumpkins.’

I decided to read Slammed based on all the raving reviews I've been seeing on Goodreads but unlike them, while I found it enjoyable enough, I didn't love it. There were just way too many flaws with the plot.

Point of Retreat, however, is a whole other story. All the problems I had with Slammed were pretty much thrown out the window while reading this one as I didn't expect a believable story. Layken and Will are finally in a relationship, her mom has passed away and she now holds the responsibility of taking care of her younger brother, just like Will.
When Will's ex-girlfriend comes into the scene, it leads to Layken questioning everything about her relationship - maybe they got into it too soon and the only thing they really had in common was that they were both parentless & had someone to take care of.

In this book, Layken managed to finally do the one thing that apparently no one thought to do in Slammed - she questioned everything about her relationship with Will and finally took some real responsibility. Sure, at times it felt weird, like watching a bunch of kids play house but Colleen Hoover managed to pull it off for the most part. I found the supporting characters absolutely awesome, they made this story for me, especially with all the frequent 'butterflying' references. It was adorable. There was humour, good character development and a bit more realistic love story, at least in comparison to Slammed.

I wouldn't say that Point of Retreat was flawless but it was good to watch Layken and Will face some normal problems in their relationship for a change that brought them closer. Overall, Point of Retreat was a memorable, heart-warming contemporary romance novel that kept me smiling through out.
