Stalk me (The Keatyn Chronicles #1) by Jillian Dodd.
Audience/Genre : Young Adult/Contemporary, Teenage Fiction.
Publication : September 1st 2012 by Bandit Publishing (first published August 20th 2012).
Gossip girl meets Hollywood in this new series by That Boy author, Jillian Dodd.

Keatyn has everything she ever dreamed of. Her life is following the script she wrote for the perfect high school experience. She’s popular, goes to the best parties, dates the hottest guy, and sits at the most coveted lunch table.

She’s just not sure she wants it anymore.

Because really, things aren’t all that perfect.
Her best friend is threatening to tell everyone her perfect relationship is a scam.
Her perfect boyfriend gets drunk at every party they go to.
It’s exhausting always trying to look and act perfect.
And deep down, she isn’t sure if she has any true friends.

To add to the drama, her movie star mom’s long-time fan has turned stalker.
An older man is flirting with her and telling her they should make a movie together.
And she’s crushing on an adorable surfer. Dating a guy like him would mean committing social suicide.

So she writes a new script. One where all the pieces of her life will come together in perfect harmony.
But little does she know, there’s someone who will do anything to make sure that doesn’t happen.

2.5 Stars.

This is going to be one confused review.

I want to provide you with a synopsis, I really do but I have no idea where to begin or end. There is no real story here. It's about a rich, spoilt girl with no common sense or a moral compass for that matter. I have nothing against the rich or spoilt part, it's Keatyn's personality that I can't stand. Also, there's this mystery stalker sub-plot going on which is kind of pointless, unrealistic and exaggerated, even for Hollywood.

Here's the thing : I adore Jillian's writing. That Boy is still one of my all time favourite contemporary novels. Jillian has the talent to create vivid characters and a writing style that easily connects you to the narrator.

Stalk Me, however, is a totally different story. If my iPad had the option of shredding e-books, I would've done it, just to watch Keatyn's face from the cover being torn to pieces. This book takes 'shallow' to a whole new level. I understand that it was the purpose, being set in Malibu and all, but I needed at least one of the characters to redeem themselves by the end, it didn't have to be the protagonist, Keatyn (whom I loathe, by the way). Look, if this was intended to be just a fluffy read, I would've been fine with the stupid plot and characters but it's a series with the same darn protagonist, which means the author feels that there's some substance/potential here. I would've agreed with that if it got better at some point, if Keatyn acted like a normal, sensible person at least once. Every time she threw the word 'love' around like she was throwing pebbles, I want to kick her.

Another thing I don't understand is, why is she giving in to peer pressure? Let me rephrase - why is there even peer pressure to begin with when she's the daughter of a big celebrity?
About the supporting characters - I remember the guys because Jillian made them hot, even though idiotic. I've a thing for surfer boy (can't remember his name right now), but he's idiotic at times too - I'm just judging him for liking such a shallow girl.

Anyway to conclude - you know in Gossip Girl (the show, not the books), in one of the seasons the plot just went all over the place with no real plan and kinda got dumb? This is a million times worse than that but if you're fine with the insanity, it's still entertaining. I still wanted to finish reading the book and that's saying something. I'm sorry Jillian, really. I do love your writing, you've still managed to create characters that made me feel strongly, although in a negative way. It's just that, I had big expectations for this one, hoping for some toe-curling, heart-fluttering moments and all I got were some hair-pulling ones (and not in a good way).

  1. ooh this is going back a bit (showing my age now LOL) but I loved the movie - The Breakfast Club - as it showed the stereotypical groups that develop in high school - the nerd, the jock, the criminal, the freak n the snob - whilst it has a sort of happy ending, it also shows that nothing will change come Monday morning and they will all return to their own groups and hardly interact as they did whilst in detention on that long, long Saturday ....

  2. I like Blair but I agree with you, the show's storyline is just ridiculous now. I think the reason I still watch is so I can see how it finally ends. The only redeeming quality about the show is the fashion. I want to raid Blair's closet!
