Fated (The Soul Seekers #1) by Alyson Noel

Fated (The Soul Seekers #1) by Alyson Noel.
Audience/Genre : Young Adult/Paranormal.
Publication : May 22nd 2012 by St. Martin's Press.
The first book in a magnificent new series about a girl who can navigate between the worlds of the living and the dead by #1 New York Times bestselling author Alyson Noël.

Lately strange things have been happening to Daire Santos. Animals follow her, crows mock her, and glowing people appear out of nowhere. Worried that Daire is having a nervous breakdown, her mother packs her off to stay in the dusty plains of Enchantment, New Mexico with a grandmother she’s never met.

There she crosses paths with Dace, a gorgeous guy with unearthly blue eyes who she’s encountered before...but only in her dreams. And she’ll get to know her grandmother—a woman who recognizes Daire’s bizarre episodes for what they are. A call to her true destiny as a Soul Seeker, one who can navigate between the worlds of the living and the dead. Her grandmother immediately begins teaching her to harness her powers—but it’s an art that must be mastered quickly. Because Dace’s brother is an evil shape-shifter who’s out to steal her powers. Now Daire must embrace her fate as a Soul Seeker and find out if Dace is one guy she’s meant to be with...or if he’s allied with the enemy she’s destined to destroy.

"I went through a war,
Fought a battle I was sure I had lost."

Daire has had the life of a nomad. As the daughter of a hollywood make-up artist, the only life she has ever known is the one on the film sets in different countries. On her 16th birthday, Daire was in Morocco with her mom while shooting another movie, when she experiences a psychotic attack that almost drives her insane. Despite consulting various doctors, these attacks wouldn't stop and finally, after trying everything, Daire's mother takes her to visit her grandmother at the small town of Enchantment, New Mexico.
Upon her arrival, Daire learns about her heritage, one that she didn't even know she had- that she was from a powerful bloodline of Soul Seekers.

"I'm going to teach you to hop with the rabbits, to slither with the snakes, to run with the horses, to crawl with the scorpions, and to fly with the ravens."

With the help of her grandmother, Daire understands her heritage and learns how to control her powers.

I was insanely excited to receive and ARC of Fated but before I could actually read it, I had heard from a few people that they were disappointed so I went in not knowing what to expect. However, I am so glad to say that I loved it! The world-building in Fated is fantastic and Alyson Noel has undoubtedly given it a lot of thought. The paranormal elements are unique and the storyline is unbelievably captivating.

Although at first, I felt like there was an information overload and everything was too much to absorb, it was also the reason I couldn't put the book down. I was up until 5AM reading Fated and let me tell you, it is EPIC!
I loved Alyson's writing, her descriptions were vivid and managed to evoke some emotion in me, which doesn't happen often. The plot is amazing and the rich Native American history along with the supernatural elements of the book, just made it even better.

Romance doesn't play a big part here but it still exists. If you prefer your story to have a fantastic plot, instead of just a swoon-worthy romance, you will love this!
I'm not saying that it lacks a male lead that makes your heart race because there's not one but two guys to choose from. Alright, alright, one of them is the bad guy but while Dace is really sweet, I found Cade sexy, even though he's not the guy I should be rooting for. The whole bad boy thing he had going on made me have a thing for him, I know it's wrong but I'm an idiot.

This was the first Alyson Noel book I've read and needless to say, I'm a new fan. While it had a slow start, Fated is a story of pure magic - breathtaking and wonderful, all at once. Soul Seekers a series that I'm definitely going to keep reading.

Arranged by Catherine McKenzie

Arranged by Catherine McKenzie.
Audience/Genre : Adult/Romance, Chicklit, Women's fiction.
Publication : May 15th 2012 by HarperCollins Publishers.
Anne Blythe has a great life: a good job, good friends, and a potential book deal for her first novel. When it comes to finding someone to share it with, however, she just can't seem to get it right.

After yet another relationship ends, Anne comes across a business card for what she thinks is a dating service, and she pockets it just in case. When her best friend, Sarah, announces she's engaged, Anne can't help feeling envious. On an impulse, she decides to give the service a try because maybe she could use a little assistance in finding the right man. But Anne soon discovers the company isn't a dating service; it's an exclusive, and pricey, arranged marriage service. She initially rejects the idea, but the more she thinks about it-and the company's success rate-the more it appeals to her. After all, arranged marriages are the norm for millions of women around the world, so why wouldn't it work for her?

A few months later, Anne is travelling to a Mexican resort, where in one short weekend she will meet and marry Jack. And against all odds, it seems to be working out-until Anne learns that Jack, and the company that arranged their marriage, are not what they seem at all.

I should probably begin with telling you that I adore Catherine's writing. I read her book Spin last year and if you've read my review, you'd know how much I loved it. Chick lits are usually predictable, they have a standard plot that involves something funny, some romance and a lovable heroine but just as with Catherine's previous novel Spin, Arranged is anything but predictable. It has all the best elements of chick lit combined with a wonderful, relatable and unique love story.

Anne Blythe is tired of dating. She's sick of going through one relationship after another hoping it would work out and that she might've found 'the one'. She's ready to settle down but after the end of her latest relationship, she realized she was nowhere closer to 'settling down' than when she was 20. However, call it fate or destiny, one day she comes across a business card that promises her the life she had dreamed of.

I'm from India and arranged marriages are pretty common here. Well, as common as something that's advertised in the papers. I understand that it's awkward, getting married to someone you don't really know and it's probably not for me but I also know that it could be and is pretty amazing for some people, although most of us don't see that. Arranged is a beautiful novel about friendship turning into love.

Anne's a protagonist that a lot of women can relate to - she's successful, has great friends, a loving family and believes in love. Sure, it's a little crazy that she has decided to go for an arranged marriage but after so many failed relationships, it's understandable. Besides, Jack and Anne hit it off right from the beginning and it's pretty awesome watching them fall in love. There's nothing sudden, abrupt or awkward about their relationship/feelings as we literally see them develop through the novel.

As for Jack, well, he's a guy and he's flawed but Anne loves him anyway. I couldn't have put it any better than the author - it all comes down to what kind of life you want - and Anne knows what she wants.

McKenzie's writing is to-the-point and enjoyable. I think she's the only author I know who manages to tackle serious topics while keeping the novel light, funny, romantic and entertaining. God, I was in tears by the end of the book - happy, sappy tears. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys love stories, chick lit or any kind of women's fiction really.

Cover Reveal : Reaper by L.S. Murphy

Reaper by L.S. Murphy
Audience/Genre : Young Adult/ Urban Fantasy.
Publication : January 7, 2013 by J. Taylor Publishing.
There's no way sixteen year old Quincy Amarante will become the fifth grim reaper. None. Not over her shiny blue Mustang. Her Jimmy Choos. Or her dead body.

She’s supposed to enjoy her sophomore year, not learn about some freaky future Destiny says she has no choice but to fulfill.

It doesn’t take long for Quincy to realize the only way out of the game is to play along especially since Death can find her anyway, anywhere, anytime. And does.

Like when she’s reassuring her friends she wants nothing to do with former best friend Ben Moorland, who’s returned from god-knows-where, and fails. Miserably.

Instead of maintaining her coveted popularity status, Quincy’s goes down like the Titanic.

Maybe ... just maybe ... that’s okay.

It seems, perhaps, becoming a grim reaper isn’t just about the dead but more about a much needed shift in Quincy’s priorities—from who she thinks she wants to be to who she really is.

What do you think about the cover? Does Reaper sound like something you might want to read?

Onyx (Lux, #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Onyx (Lux, #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout.
Audience/Genre : Young Adult/Sci-Fi, Paranormal.
Publication : August 14th 2012 by Entangled Teen.
Being connected to Daemon Black sucks…

Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarre connection. I’ve sworn him off even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But against all common sense, I’m falling for him. Hard.

Our relationship issues aren’t out biggest problem…

The Department of Defense is here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we’re linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And when a new boy shows up a school with a secret of his own, things get complicated fast. I need to choose between my own instincts and Daemon’s.

But then everything changes…

I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. Daemon’s never going to stop searching until gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?

No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies.

Oh. My. Freaking. God.

I'm flitting between a state of shock and tears, it's so hard to put my emotions into words right now.
I honestly went into Onyx just hoping to get my Daemon fix but I am not kidding when I say that it just blew my face off. Onyx was so much more than just Daemon-hotness. Action-packed doesn't even begin to cut it as it was pure jaw-dropping amazingness!

For those of you who've read Obsidian, you're all probably dying to read Onyx (just like I was until yesterday) so you can get more Daemon-love and the sexy flirting/banter between Kat and him. Not unlike you, I went in looking for exactly that and all I can say is, I got all that and more. We get to see a completely different, deeper side of Daemon who finally, after years of looking after others, is going after something that he wants just for himself - Katy.
I have to say that after reading this book, I'm not just in lust with Daemon but utterly, head-over-heels in love with him too.

Like I've said a million times before, I love Jennifer's writing. She's witty, funny, entertaining and excellent at character development. Jen's worked her magic again in Onyx!
The whole time I was reading it, I could actually see Katy and Daemon change and grow into who they're meant to be, overcoming their flaws and learning from their mistakes. They've been through so much and Katy is definitely not just the simple, shy girl she was when she first came to Ketterman, nor is Daemon just the obnoxious alien next door who's in desperate need of anger-management . It's astounding how much they've affected each other's lives.
Onyx has just the perfect amount romance! There were moments that seriously left me breathless. This is love. It's not easy but they stick together through it all.

This time around, Jen has definitely proved that not only is she a natural at creating fantastic characters but also extremely talented at building an interesting, exciting world just like she did with her Covenant series. So many questions about the Luxens were answered while simultaneously exploring the consequences of what happened between Daemon and Kat at the end of Obsidian.

Onyx has literally left me craving for more Daemon, action and all things Lux. Intense and electrifying, Onyx is one heck of a sequel and I loved every moment of it.

Pretty Amy by Lisa Burstein

Pretty Amy by Lisa Burstein.
Audience/Genre : Young Adult/Contemporary.
Publication : May 8th 2012 by Entangled Publishing.
Amy is fine living in the shadows of beautiful Lila and uber-cool Cassie, because at least she’s somewhat beautiful and uber-cool by association. But when their dates stand them up for prom, and the girls take matters into their own hands—earning them a night in jail outfitted in satin, stilettos, and Spanx—Amy discovers even a prom spent in handcuffs might be better than the humiliating “rehabilitation techniques” now filling up her summer. Worse, with Lila and Cassie parentally banned, Amy feels like she has nothing—like she is nothing.

Navigating unlikely alliances with her new coworker, two very different boys, and possibly even her parents, Amy struggles to decide if it’s worth being a best friend when it makes you a public enemy. Bringing readers along on an often hilarious and heartwarming journey, Amy finds that maybe getting a life only happens once you think your life is over.

I started reading Pretty Amy expecting a light story about high school drama on prom night. Instead, I got something much deeper.

Pretty Amy is the story Amy, a high school senior who's friends with the wrong kind girls just to feel accepted. The book begins on Prom Night when Amy and her two 'best friends' Lila and Cassie get stood up by their dates and an act of revenge ends up getting them arrested. Talk about a prom night from hell.

Whatever I was expecting, it was not this. Pretty Amy was way better than that. We all know what high school's like. Sure, things could be much worse but being invisible is every teenage girl's worst nightmare and it seems like the end of the world at the time.
Amy used to be an average girl with good grades and a so-so group of friends . All she has wanted was to belong, be something, feel like she was special even if she really wasn't and despite all the drinking, partying, drugs and the crazy trouble, Cassie and Lila gave her that, until Prom Night.

Lisa Burstein has written a fantastic novel exploring the troubles and insecurities of high school, peer-pressure and the consequences of your actions. The writing - sarcastic and full of wit - seriously made this book unputdownable.

I could understand and even relate to a lot of Amy's feelings, thoughts and choices and although I was screaming "Wake up!" the whole time as her world was falling apart, I probably would've reacted the same way at her age. Amy's resentment toward her mother, shrink, Joe and everyone else who tried to help her, I felt, was extreme and yet realistic and believable.

Although my high school experience was nothing like that, through the entire novel when I was in Amy's head, I could actually understand where she was coming from, her anger and also the vulnerable side that she tried so hard not to show. With Pretty Amy, Burstein got it all right - the way she let the emotions, events and dialogues play out among the characters.

"If bitching were karate, my mother would be a black belt."

Pretty Amy isn't just about the serious stuff one goes through in high school, the author also got all the embarrassing, awkward moments perfect while writing the book! The added humor just made it all the better. Amy's mother trying to help, haha, my mother is so like that!

Highly engaging, gritty and sometimes dark, I really enjoyed reading Pretty Amy, I hope you do too!
