How to Dance with a Duke (Ugly Ducklings #1) by Manda Collins

Goodreads|Amazon|Book Depository

What’s a wallflower to do when she’s suddenly in need of a husband? Use all the pluck and moxie she can muster to get what she wants…

Miss Cecily Hurston would much rather explore the antiquities of Egypt than the uncharted territory of marriage. But the rules of her father’s exclusive academic society forbid her entrance unless she weds one of its members. To clear her ailing father’s name of a scandalous rumor, Cecily needs to gain admission into the Egyptian Club—and is willing to marry any old dullard to do it.

Lucas Dalton, Duke of Winterson, is anything but dull. He’s a dashing and decorated war hero determined to help Cecily—even if that means looking the other way when she claims the dance card of Amelia Snow, this season’s most sought-after beauty. But Lucas has a reason for wanting Cecily to join the Egyptian Club: His brother went missing during one of Lord Hurston’s expeditions to Egypt. An alliance with the explorer’s bluestocking daughter could bring Lucas closer to the truth about what happened…or it could lead him to a more dangerous love than either he or Cecily could have imagined….

How to Dance with a Duke (Ugly Ducklings, #1)How to Dance with a Duke by Manda Collins

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Manda Collins' debut with the Ugly Ducklings is quite well-written. I've only recently discovered the fun of historical fiction/romance and How to Dance with a Duke was a satisfying read.

Cecily Hurston , daughter of an acclaimed archeologist, is trying to gain access into an exclusive Egyptian club to get her hands on her father's diaries. Lucas Dalton, Duke of Winterson, the brother of Lord Hurston's secretary Willam, is trying to solve his brother's murder. Since, everything leads to the Egyptian Club, Cecily and Luke decide on a marriage of convenience in order to help solve both their problems.

Despite the usual cliches, the book was a cute and entertaining read. There's the usual guy-meets-girl instant romance and chemistry. There's also the obvious a big bad villain who could've been portrayed better. However, How to Dance with a Duke does have some amusing moments with Cecily. After a lot of sparks, scheming and lovemaking, there's a happy ending.

Ugly Ducklings is a three book series. I assume that the secondary characters in this book, i.e. Cecily's cousins, take the lead in the next two novels.

So yes, this may not be an excellent/extraordinary book that leaves a lasting impression but it is a feel good novel for days when cliches do work.
